Aqel Nazir, who lives in Khost province in eastern Afghanistan, claims to have been born in the 1880s, meaning he would have been in his thirties when the Third Anglo-Afghan War broke out in 1919.

The old man said he still remembers celebrating the end of the war with King Amanullah Khan, the Afghan leader who launched a holy war against the British to gain full independence for his country.
“I was in the palace with King Amanullah Khan,” Nazir recalled. “I was over 30 years old. Everyone was happy and thanked King Amanullah Khan for driving the British out. Many leaders came with us to the Arg [presidential palace], but all of them have passed away now,” he said.
However, Mr. Nazir has not yet provided any documents to support his claim. This has prompted the Taliban, the force controlling Afghanistan, to launch an investigation to verify.
Mustaghfar Gurbaz, a Taliban spokesman in Khost province, said a special team had been sent to assess Nazir’s age. “If it is confirmed by documents or assessment, we will proceed to register him as the oldest person in the world ,” Gurbaz said.
Nazir lives in the hills of Khost, surrounded by a large, extended family who also claim he is the world’s oldest person. “I am 50 years old. He is my grandfather,” said Khyal Wazir, one of Nazir’s grandsons.
“We demand the government to confirm our grandfather’s age using his ID card or any other scientific method or document to prove that he is 140 years old,” said another of his grandchildren, Abdul Hakim Sabari.
