(CPV) - During the more than four-hour meeting of former Vietnamese language students, the auditorium was filled with laughter and also with wistfulness and nostalgia in the corners of their eyes. The love for the Vietnamese language, the affection and attachment to the country and people of Vietnam brought them closer together and helped strengthen the Vietnam-Russia friendship.


In 2024, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs ' State University of International Relations (MGIMO) celebrates its 80th anniversary. Also this year, the school's departments of Chinese, Vietnamese, Burmese, Thai, Lao and Khmer also celebrate their 70th anniversary. On this occasion, on November 8, 2024, the Vietnamese department organized a meeting for former students studying Vietnamese at the school. This event was organized with the support of the Language Training Department and funding from the MGIMO Endowment Fund, the Vladimir Potanin Charitable Foundation and the Foundation for the Development of Russian-Vietnamese Cooperation "Tradition and Friendship".

This is the first time the meeting of MGIMO's Vietnamese alumni has been held.

Attending the meeting were generations of former students who studied Vietnamese from the 50s of the last century until now. They are diplomats, teachers, politicians , businessmen..., people who have been working in many different areas of social life but are united by a common point: love for the Vietnamese language, love and attachment to the country and people of Vietnam.

During the past 70 years since 1954, when the first group of Vietnamese language learners was established, many people have become Vietnam scholars, diplomats...

Among them, former Ambassadors, Minister Counselors, and Russian diplomats who worked in Vietnam such as Tatarinov AA, Kovtun AG, Khovaev IA, Bakeeva EN, Popov AV, Mizonova MG, Balgabaev BT... shared stories about their diplomatic lives in Vietnam, their experiences and funny stories when working as interpreters for high-ranking officials of Russia and Vietnam.

Many Vietnamese scholars working in Russia attended the meeting in person and shared about their years studying Vietnamese at school. Meanwhile, some Vietnamese scholars working in Germany, Vietnam, etc. shared online. They all recalled the early days, the difficulties, the happy and sad memories when getting acquainted with Vietnamese, remembered their teachers and classmates, and shared their stories and experiences with the younger generation of Vietnamese scholars. Not everyone chose Vietnamese from the beginning, but all Vietnamese scholars shared that they never regretted their choice, they lived, devoted themselves, were attached to, and loved the country and people of Vietnam.  

At the meeting, Ms. Bui Hang, First Secretary of the Vietnamese Embassy in Russia, expressed her gratitude to generations of teachers and former students of the Vietnamese language department; affirmed their great contributions to building the Vietnam-Russia friendship.

On behalf of the Tradition and Friendship Fund, Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hung - Director of the Fund expressed his sincere thanks to the leaders of MGIMO, the staff and teachers of the Foreign Languages ​​Department, especially the teachers of the Vietnamese language department, who have sown the seeds of the Vietnamese language for many years, building a bridge for the Vietnam - Russia friendship.

Mr. Nguyen Quoc Hung, Director of the Tradition and Friendship Fund, spoke at the meeting.

In recent years, the Fund has been honored to accompany MGIMO and the Faculty in many events to exchange and promote Vietnamese-Russian language and culture such as: Vietnamese Translation Contest, Vietnam Day at MGIMO, etc., contributing a small part to the cause of teaching and learning Vietnamese, helping the people of the two countries get closer together. Mr. Hung affirmed that the Fund is always ready to cooperate and welcome proposals and ideas in the fields of Vietnamese language and Vietnamese culture research in Russia, Russian language and Russian culture research in Vietnam.

During the more than four hours of the meeting of former Vietnamese language students, the auditorium was filled with laughter and also with a sense of nostalgia and nostalgia in the corners of their eyes. The former students attending the meeting expressed their emotions and gratitude to the Organizing Committee for giving them the opportunity to express their gratitude to their teachers and meet friends to review a period of their youth and speak Vietnamese together - the language that helped them connect with each other and with the country of Vietnam./.
