(CLO) Former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, arrived in Beijing to hold two-day talks with Chinese leaders.

Besides meeting senior Chinese government officials, Mr. Medvedev will lay a wreath at the Monument to the People's Heroes in Beijing's Tiananmen Square - China's national memorial to revolutionary martyrs.

Mr Medvedev's visit is part of a broader push to strengthen ties between Russia and China, with the two sides pledging to step up their "unlimited" partnership, announced in February 2022.

Medvedev's previous visit to China took place in December 2022. He held a series of meetings with Chinese officials to discuss bilateral and international issues.

Meetings between Russia and China, including between party officials, continue to take place in various forms.

In October, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov also visited Beijing. Both sides said Belousov's meetings focused on military and defense talks aimed at deepening cooperation.

Mr Medvedev, the former Russian president, is now one of the most prominent figures pursuing Moscow's hardline policy in defending Russia's military activities in Ukraine.
