While billionaire Elon Musk announced his support for former President Donald Trump in the race for the White House, most employees at the companies of the richest man on the planet donated to support Republican candidate Vice President Kamala Harris.

According to OpenSecrets, a nonprofit that tracks U.S. campaign contributions and lobbying data, employees at Tesla, SpaceX, and X have donated to the Democratic candidate. Tesla employees have donated $42,824 to Harris’s campaign, compared to $24,840 to Trump’s. SpaceX employees have donated $34,526 to Harris, compared to $7,652 to Trump. Meanwhile, employees at X have donated $13,213 to Harris, compared to less than $500 to Trump. While these numbers are relatively small for campaign fundraising, they reflect Musk’s political leanings. Previously, the world's richest man expressed his support for candidate Trump on social network X. On July 15, the Wall Street Journal quoted a number of informed sources as saying that billionaire Musk pledged to contribute about $45 million/month to American PAC - a political action committee supporting candidate Trump's US presidential campaign.
Musk supported President Joe Biden in 2020 but has since switched his support to the Republican candidate. Former President Trump has said that if elected, he would appoint businessman Musk to head a government efficiency commission. The OpenSecrets data includes donations from employees and company owners, as well as immediate family members of those individuals. Election finance laws prohibit corporations from donating to federal campaigns on their own.
