Taiwan tightens e-visa issuance for Vietnamese visitors

VnExpressVnExpress14/09/2023

From 10am on September 14, Korean and Japanese visas of Vietnamese visitors will no longer be useful for applying for Taiwan e-visa.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Ho Chi Minh City announced changes to online visa (e-visa) registration on the afternoon of September 13. Accordingly, from 10:00 a.m. on September 14, Vietnamese people using Korean and Japanese visas to apply for e-visas to enter Taiwan will not be accepted when registering on the online review system.

Visas issued before September 14 under this form will still be valid. In addition to Vietnam, the new policy also applies to other countries in the Southeast Asian region.

Ms. Vu Thi Bich Hue, representative of Flamingo Redtours, said that Taiwan's tightening of e-visa conditions could be to prevent cases where visitors embellish their applications with Korean or Japanese visas and then enter Taiwan for "other purposes".

According to Ms. Hue, this new move by the Taiwanese government will more or less affect independent travelers or individual travelers. "The Quan Hong visa is still being implemented as usual, so customers who register for tours will not be affected," Ms. Hue said. The Quan Hong visa is an e-visa issued to groups of 5 or more people from travel companies on the list designated by the Taiwan Tourism Bureau.

For Vietnamese tourists traveling independently, from September 14 onwards, if they want to enter Taiwan via an e-visa, they need to present one of the following documents: a valid residence card or permanent residence/valid visa (including an e-visa, but must be printed on paper)/a residence card or visa that has expired within 10 years, issued by the following countries: the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the Schengen area. In case you have an Australian or New Zealand e-visa and want to apply for an e-visa to Taiwan, the e-visa you have must still be valid.

Vietnamese visitors who have a visa or residence card issued by Taiwan within the past 10 years and have not violated the law are also eligible to apply for an e-visa. However, this preferential condition does not apply to those who have a visa with the symbols FL (work visa), X (other visa), P (Quan Hong visa) or a residence card for workers.

If you are unable to apply for a conditional visa exemption online above, you will need to go to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office to apply for a paper visa.
