Ambassador Marc Knapper talks about US President Joe Biden's visit

On September 6, US Ambassador to Vietnam Marc Knapper met with the press to inform about the US President's state visit to Vietnam as well as the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and the US.

Answering a question about the purpose and significance of US President Joe Biden's visit to Vietnam, Ambassador Marc Knapper said: The US policy towards Vietnam over the years has been based on respect for each other's territorial integrity, sovereignty and political institutions. Vietnam and the US share the same approach to a number of international issues, including the East Sea.

, the two sides fully agreed on the importance of complying with international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea; and resolving resolving East Sea issues. The US also shared with Vietnam areas of international cooperation such as responding to climate change, health, especially the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Regarding the future relationship, Ambassador Marc Knapper emphasized that the US shares Vietnam's efforts to make Vietnam a high-income country by 2045 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

"That is why we are looking forward to the US President's visit to Vietnam to show that the future of our two countries is connected and to realize the set goals," the Ambassador said.

Regarding the question of how significant the visit of US President Joe Biden is in promoting people-to-people exchanges between the two countries, Ambassador Marc Knapper said that one of the US's goals is to promote cooperation between the two countries based on mutual understanding and trust. And the fastest way to achieve that is people-to-people exchanges. In addition, strengthening cooperation in the field ofeducation is also the foundation for building relations between the two countries.

According to the Ambassador, the number of Vietnamese students studying in the US currently ranks 5th among countries, with about 30,000 students. However, this number does not fully reflect the educational cooperation between the two countries, because there are many students studying short-term programs and studying online. "I also hope that President Joe Biden's visit this time will create more opportunities for educational cooperation between the two countries," the Ambassador shared.

Also at the press conference, Ambassador Marc Knapper added that during the US President's visit to Vietnam, the two sides are expected to have cooperative exchanges in the field of green energy.

Earlier, announcing the visit, Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang expressed her belief that the visits by the two countries' senior leaders will further deepen the Vietnam-US relationship, bringing the bilateral relationship to stable, substantive and long-term development in all fields, contributing to maintaining peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region as well as in the world.

Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Quang Vinh, Chairman of the Vietnam - US Friendship Association, assessed that in the year of the 10th anniversary of the Comprehensive Partnership, Vietnam - US will promote better relations, in which economy will be one of the focus of cooperation.

The two sides will promote in new areas such as digital transformation, innovative technology, green transformation, including commitments on climate change adaptation, green energy use, green economy, green infrastructure, etc., which are still full of potential. Technology cooperation will be an important area.

"For Vietnam, in order to take advantage of financial flows and investment for digital transformation, green and clean transformation, including related science and technology, the Government is focusing on improving the policy framework to be more suitable, further improving infrastructure and human resources. If we agree to implement it, it will strongly promote cooperation between the two countries" - former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Quang Vinh expected.
