Interestingly, this 12-string Hootenanny acoustic guitar has not been used or mentioned in more than half a century, since it appeared in The Beatles' 1965 album and film Help!
Guitar sold for record price
The guitar was once owned by Scottish guitarist Gordon Waller, best known as one half of the pop duo Peter and Gordon, who later passed it on to his band's managers.
Decades later, the guitar was rediscovered by its new owners living in rural England when they moved house and put it up for auction with an estimated price of between £485,000 and £647,000.
The guitar was acquired via telephone bidding at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York yesterday as part of Julien's Auctions' two-day " music icons" sale.
"We are delighted and honoured to have set a new world record for the sale of John Lennon's lost Hootenanny guitar," said David Goodman, CEO of Julien's Auctions. "This guitar is not only a piece of musical history but also a symbol of his enduring legacy. It is a testament to the timeless appeal and reverence of The Beatles' music and John Lennon."
This guitar, made by the Bavarian company Framus in the early 1960s, appeared in the film Help! when the band performed You've Got to Hide Your Love Away . It was also used in the recording sessions for this album on songs such as It's Only Love, I've Just Seen a Face and Girl and Norwegian Wood played by George Harrison.

Darren Julien revealed that he travelled to the UK to verify the guitar at the house where it was kept and discovered the original case had been thrown away, with the help of Beatles biographers Andy Babiuk and Danny Bennett.
In 2015, Julien's Auctions also sold another of Lennon's guitars. It was a stolen Gibson J-160E acoustic guitar that was accidentally purchased by a musician in the late 1960s. It eventually fetched $2.4 million.
In addition, the drum set once used by Ringo Starr and the physical version of the White Album once owned by this member were also auctioned at the above event.
