Bahnar villagers reenact the water worship ceremony

(CLO) Every October, the Bahnar ethnic community in Kbang district, Gia Lai province, holds a water worship ceremony with the hope of having abundant water resources, favorable weather, good health for villagers, and full granaries.


In order to continue promoting local cultural and traditional values ​​​​at risk of being lost, on October 25, at the field of Kgiang village, Kong Long Khong commune (Kbang district, Gia Lai province), specialized agencies coordinated to re-enact the rituals and ceremonies of worshiping the water wharf of the Bahnar people.

Cultural space where the Bahnar community in Kbang district lives, preserving the traditional cultural features of the nation.

Delighted when the ceremony took place in Kgiang village field, many villagers and people in the area came and witnessed the water worship ceremony that the council of village elders remembered and recreated.

According to village elders, the Bahnar people's water wharf worship ceremony is usually held in October and November of the solar calendar every year. Offerings include 3 jars of rice wine, 1 large pig, 1 big and strong rooster and 1 young hen.

The village elders also offer offerings to the Gods and spirits with the wish that the villagers will be warm, happy, and have a bountiful harvest.

After the ritual was prepared by the villagers, with the most beautiful traditional costumes being worn, the village elders and the council of elders performed the ghost worship and Yang worship rituals.

In the prayer at the ceremony, the village elder asked the Mountain God, Water God and other gods to grant the villagers an abundant source of water; pray for favorable rain and wind; bless the villagers with health, peace, bountiful crops, full granaries, and no epidemics in the village all year round...

The sacred wharf is always protected and preserved by villagers in the Bahnar ethnic community.

As soon as the rituals and ceremonies of worshiping Yang ended, the gong and female xoang dance team of Kgiang village in colorful traditional costumes were ready to play the gongs, resounding throughout the area as if inviting the people in the area to join in the fun and drink rice wine with Kgiang village.

Offerings are offered by village elders to the gods in the community.

To the sound of gongs, villagers and visitors from near and far join hands in the xoang circle to enter the village's big festival and drink the strong rice wine that the villagers have brewed for many months.

The village elder happily screwed the jar of wine, officially inviting villagers and distinguished guests to attend the festival of Kgiang village.

The reenactment of the water wharf worshiping ritual of the Bahnar people in Kbang district is the wish of the villagers and cultural management agencies to preserve the traditional ritual, contributing to the preservation, promotion and development of cultural heritage in the ethnic minority communities in Gia Lai.

The female gong team of Kgiang village happily opened the festival, the sound of gongs echoed throughout the hills.

At the same time, this is also an opportunity to promote the value of the Central Highlands Gong Cultural Space recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
