In early June 2023, not only Hai Phong residents but also many tourists from northern provinces and cities when experiencing Tam Bac and The Lu walking streets could not help but regret the hundreds of swans that the city raised on the Tam Bac River, which are now gone. Currently, there are only 5 swans left in the long and wide river.

Of the 200 imported swans raised and released on the Tam Bac River by Hai Phong, only 5 are still alive.

According to Mr. Pham Hiep (in Ha Ly street, Ha Ly ward, Hong Bang district, Hai Phong city), in the first days when the city released white swans into Tam Bac river, Mr. Hiep as well as many people were very excited, in the evening everyone poured out to both sides of the river to watch the swans swimming happily.

"A scene that probably only exists in Europe," Mr. Hiep recalled.

However, according to Mr. Hiep, at that time, many people were concerned and thought that the Tam Bac River water source was polluted by oil slicks from vehicles, waste flowing in and out with the tide, and domestic wastewater discharged directly into the sewers, which would pose a great risk to the swans.

What Mr. Hiep and the city's residents feared has happened. Of the 200 swans that once roamed the river, people can now count only 5.

The number of swans believed to have died from disease caused by polluted water in the Tam Bac River.

Speaking with Thanh Nien reporter, Mr. Pham Van Doan, Chairman of Hong Bang District People's Committee confirmed that the reason why most of the 200 swans died, with only 5 remaining, was because the living environment was not guaranteed, the water source on Tam Bac River was polluted, causing many swans to be poisoned and infected with bacteria and die.

To improve the water environment on the Tam Bac River, according to Mr. Doan, the district and city are planning to block both ends of the Tam Bac River, turning the river into a freshwater lake similar to Tam Bac Lake. At the same time, domestic wastewater discharge points will be connected to other areas, not allowed to flow into the Tam Bac River anymore.

Without the swans swimming happily, Tam Bac River becomes sadder than before.

Previously, on May 9, 2019, the Tam Bac River renovation project phase 1, from Lac Long bridge to Tam Bac park, Hong Bang district (Hai Phong city) was inaugurated with a total investment of over 1,454 billion VND.

To make Tam Bac River more lively and attractive to tourists and city residents after being renovated, Hai Phong City People's Committee allowed Hong Bang District People's Committee to weave steel mesh to block both ends of the river, to make a 'home' for 35 pairs of white swans to live.

One year later, with the sponsorship of 25 units and businesses, 65 more pairs of swans were brought back and released into the Tam Bac River, increasing the number of swans here to 200.
