Over 60 papers submitted to the conference by scientists , managers, leading experts in history and culture, and local leaders offered objective and fair assessments of the contributions of the Mac Dynasty to the course of Vietnamese history. These papers provided many new discoveries and interpretations, helping to enhance scientific understanding and address practical needs of both localities and the country in the current period.

Hai Phong - the birthplace of the Mac Dynasty

According to Comrade Nguyen Van Tung, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Committee of Hai Phong City, the national-level scientific conference "The Mac Dynasty in the Process of Vietnamese History" is very significant as it takes place in Hai Phong, the birthplace of the Mac Dynasty, and coincides with the 540th anniversary of the birth of Emperor Mac Dang Dung (December 22, 1483). The results of the conference will provide scientific arguments and reliable historical data that contribute to an objective, comprehensive, and fair assessment of the positive contributions of the Mac Dynasty, and will be appropriately reflected in our country's national history.

Comrade Nguyen Van Tung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hai Phong City, delivered a speech.

According to Comrade Nguyen Van Tung, in recent years, the Party Committee, the government, and many units of Hai Phong city, along with the Mac Clan Council, have carried out many specific and practical activities to honor the contributions of the Mac Dynasty and the precious legacies it left behind, such as: Organizing seminars on the life and career of Mac Thai To, Empress Dowager Vu Thi Ngoc Toan, Prince Mac Phuc Tu, Buddhism during the Mac Dynasty, and markets during the Mac Dynasty. They also dedicated a chapter on the Mac Dynasty in the four-volume History of Hai Phong, published in 2021, and included it in local education materials (History subject).

In addition, many scientists have published works on the Mac Dynasty. The legacies left by the Mac Dynasty have been honored, scientifically documented, and proposed for national and city-level ranking, recognized as National Treasures, the Minh The Festival (an intangible cultural heritage) has been maintained, and streets, roads, and public works have been named after prominent figures of the Mac Dynasty...

The imprint of the Mac Dynasty on the nation's history.

Professor Vu Minh Giang, Chairman of the Science and Training Council of Hanoi National University and Vice President of the Vietnam Historical Science Association, stated that in Vietnamese history, the Mac Dynasty existed for 150 years, encompassing two periods: 65 years of rule in Thang Long (1527-1592) and 85 years of capital in Cao Bang (1592-1677). Throughout that period, especially the period of rule in Thang Long (present-day Hanoi), the Mac Dynasty made significant contributions to the country's history in many aspects. These included reforms in political institutions, ideology, law, administration, and the military. The modernization efforts of the Mac Dynasty, along with its valuable legacy and experiences, remain relevant today.

Professor, Doctor of Science Vu Minh Giang presented his paper at the conference.

At the conference, scientists conducted in-depth research, clarifying the comprehensive development achievements of the Dai Viet nation under the Mac Dynasty, particularly emphasizing the high regard for the Mac Dynasty's economic thinking and maritime vision; and the Mac Dynasty's contributions to the development of trade and the flourishing of cities and port cities.

The open-minded thinking and liberal policies of the Mac Dynasty initiated a period of cultural revival and strong development, clearly reflected in material achievements, religion, beliefs, education and examinations, art, and architecture… However, according to Professor and Doctor of Science Vu Minh Giang, due to inherent limitations, mainly stemming from political viewpoints from the Le and Nguyen dynasties, there have been inaccurate, biased, and unfair perceptions of the Mac Dynasty.

A view of the national scientific conference "The Mac Dynasty in the Process of Vietnamese History".

We had the opportunity to meet Professor Dinh Khac Thuan, from the Institute of Han Nom Studies, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, who provided us with many images of 182 stone inscriptions from the Mac Dynasty in the 16th century – a period of explosive growth in village and commune inscriptions. He noted that Mac Dynasty inscriptions were very common in the Red River Delta and Ninh Binh.

Notably, Ninh Binh, bordering Thanh Hoa, was formerly part of the Le Dynasty's territory, yet the steles erected there bear the reign names of the Mac Dynasty, demonstrating the region's loyalty to the Mac Dynasty in particular, and the Red River Delta in general. It is known that Professor Dinh Khac Thuan dedicated considerable time to translating each stele and providing accurate information to historians regarding various aspects of the Mac Dynasty's governmental organization, economy, culture, and religious practices during this period.

Properly assess the positive contributions of the Mac Dynasty.

Within the framework of the conference and through meticulous and serious research, scientists unanimously agreed that, over the past four decades, along with the country's development and Vietnam's international integration, based on the perspective of historical innovation and scientific and technological achievements, the general understanding not only of historical researchers but also of society as a whole has gradually changed.

Understanding of the Mạc Dynasty and the Mạc era has gradually improved. Every aspect of Đại Việt's politics, diplomacy, economy, culture, and society during the Mạc period is studied and analyzed more objectively, scientifically, and comprehensively, revealing both the positive and negative aspects of the Mạc Dynasty. This leads to assessments closer to reality regarding the merits and contributions of this dynasty to national history.

Delegates offer incense at the Memorial Area of the Mac Dynasty Kings in Hai Phong.

According to the Vietnam Historical Science Association, the Mạc Dynasty kings and historical figures made significant contributions in various fields to the process of building, developing, and defending the country. From a scientific perspective, Central Committee member and Minister of Education and Training Nguyễn Kim Sơn and historian Dương Trung Quốc emphasized the perspective of what is called the culture of the Eastern region, with its generous, strong, and unconventional people, which contributed to the new developmental elements of Vietnamese feudalism in the 16th century. Studying this element will be useful for guiding development today.

Based on these studies and assessments, Dr. Hoang Van Ke, Chairman of the Mac Clan Council of Hai Phong, believes that the Vietnam Historical Science Association, as well as Vietnamese historians and relevant state agencies, need to promptly develop solutions and a roadmap for revising the history of the Mac Dynasty and its kings to accurately reflect the established historical reality. In particular, many valuable historical sites and relics of the Mac Dynasty have been severely damaged, even erased, and cannot be restored or reconstructed. Given this situation, he proposes that the State, Government, and relevant agencies continue to research and refine policies for preserving, conserving, and promoting the value of these heritage sites.
