The implementation of projects, including Bich Dam Island in the curriculum, not only awakens students' love for the sea and islands.

This also helps them become more aware of protecting the livelihoods of their families and communities.

The potential and advantages of Bich Dam Island are being awakened to create a new look for this beautiful island. These days, on their journey to Bich Dam Island, the furthest island from Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province (Vinh Nguyen Ward, Nha Trang City) to carry out universal education, the teachers of Bui Thi Xuan Secondary School (Nha Trang City) all share a joyful feeling as the project "Developing green and sustainable community tourism in Bich Dam" is being implemented and integrated into their teaching.

Rekindling love for the sea and islands.

Thanks to this project, teachers are aware of their great responsibility in teaching. From the foundation of knowledge they have accumulated, students will confidently apply it in practice to serve tourism on the island in the near future. As the island develops and meets the demand for jobs, it will also be a way to retain young people in their homeland.

In addition to teaching compulsory subjects such as mathematics, literature, and natural science, the teachers also prepare teaching materials for the subject of Local Education. This subject integrates many sub-disciplines, focusing on issues related to the local culture, history, geography, society, and environment. Through the subject's content, students will be equipped with knowledge about protecting maritime sovereignty and islands; fostering love for their homeland, sea, and islands; and developing an awareness of how to learn and apply what they have learned to contribute to solving local problems.

Taking advantage of Bich Dam Island's many scenic spots and ancient relics rich in historical value, teachers proactively prepare lessons closely linked to reality. For example, when introducing Bich Dam communal house, teachers guide students to learn about its history, architecture, cultural value, and tourism development potential. The ancient communal house, located near the bustling pier on the island, is already very familiar to the students, and now, when included in the lesson, they can verify this by observing it directly whenever they pass by the site. Similarly, the ancient banyan tree and the majestic Hon Lon lighthouse, known as the "eye of the sea" of Nha Trang Bay, also become vivid and engaging visual illustrations.

Bich Dam Island is beautiful not only because of its name, but also because of the unique and original landscapes and historical sites that have been preserved to this day. All of this is vividly portrayed in each lesson, helping students deeply understand the value of protecting sovereignty and the love for the sea and islands of the Fatherland.

A new look for the small island.

The project "Developing green and sustainable community tourism in Bich Dam" is the aspiration of the island's residents, as it meets their long-term livelihood needs and finds a sustainable way to develop tourism by using "coastal culture - fishing village lifestyle" as the main orientation for development.

With the advantage of being established over 300 years ago, Bich Dam fishing village is isolated from modern life, so human impact, changes, and modifications to the landscape are virtually unaffected. The area is also blessed by nature with a sheer cliff on one side and a vast, sheltered blue sea on the other, ideal for anchoring boats during storms.

The island boasts the Hon Lon lighthouse, Bich Dam communal house, An Thanh temple, Bich Son pagoda, a heritage banyan tree approximately 150 years old, and a diverse culinary scene with fresh seafood caught near the shore. These are all unique advantages that attract more tourists to the island.

Alongside creating livelihoods for the island's residents, the development of community-based tourism is being pursued in a green, sustainable manner, linked to environmental protection. Specifically, the Khanh Hoa Provincial Women's Union has spearheaded the project "Promoting dialogue and cooperation between the community and the private sector with state agencies in coral reef conservation and sustainable development of the Hon Mun sea area, Nha Trang Bay, Khanh Hoa province".

With this project, the most important thing remains raising awareness among the island's residents about protecting maritime sovereignty and islands; protecting marine resources and coral reefs to transform livelihoods into sustainable models through tourism activities. The southern part of Bich Dam Island has a good seabed structure, clear water, and white sand, allowing coral to naturally recover and gradually restore the reef to its original state.

Furthermore, in the future, utilizing sheltered coastal areas to pilot a model of cultivating sea grapes will not only create new livelihoods and increase income for local people but also aim to create a unique tourism product for visitors to experience.

The potential and advantages of Bich Dam Island are gradually being awakened to create a new image for this beautiful small island. And we expect that with the implementation of projects and the inclusion of Bich Dam Island in the curriculum, we will not only awaken students' love for the sea and islands but also help them become more aware of protecting the livelihoods of their families and communities in the future.

Creating sustainable livelihoods for the people.

On January 3rd, the Khanh Hoa Provincial Women's Union, in collaboration with other units, organized a conference to summarize the project "Promoting dialogue and cooperation between the community and the private sector with state agencies in coral reef conservation and sustainable development of the Hon Mun marine area, Nha Trang Bay, Khanh Hoa province".

Launched in August 2023, the project has so far achieved three objectives in protecting the environment of Nha Trang Bay and conserving the coral reefs in the strictly protected area of Hon Mun, Nha Trang Bay, including establishing a sustainable livelihood foundation for the Bich Dam community living near the strictly protected area of Hon Mun.

Mr. Nguyen Van Minh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nha Trang City, highly appreciated the positive impacts of the project on the people of Bich Dam in Nha Trang Bay. According to Mr. Minh, this project, along with the city's implementation of the "Developing green and sustainable community tourism in Bich Dam" project, is expected to create sustainable livelihoods for the people. Granting benefits to the people on the island is also the most practical measure to raise their awareness and responsibility in protecting maritime sovereignty.
