Lightning Start
In both international matches during FIFA Days in March, against Cambodia (friendly) and against Laos (third round of the 2027 Asian Cup qualifiers), the Vietnamese national team scored the opening goal very early. Specifically, we opened the scoring against Cambodia in the 26th minute on March 19th. And in the match against Laos on the evening of March 25th, Coach Kim Sang-sik's team scored the first goal in the 11th minute.

This is a rare occurrence for the Vietnamese national team at the 2024 AFF Cup. Except for the second leg of the final against Thailand at the Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, the Vietnamese team did not score a goal in the first half in any match. Compared to the 2024 AFF Cup, the current Vietnamese team starts better, plays faster, and finds the opponent's net earlier.
The reason for this could be that, compared to the 2024 AFF Cup, the Vietnamese players are now more familiar with the tactical formations and operational methods set out by coach Kim Sang-sik.
In this regard, former Vietnam national team coach Phan Thanh Hung analyzed: "Last year, Kim Sang-sik had only recently arrived in Vietnam, and his coaching philosophy was still unfamiliar to many domestic players. However, after the AFF Cup campaign, there was a growing familiarity between Kim and the players, and among the players themselves. The more time the players spent playing in a team built by Coach Kim Sang-sik, the more proficient they became."
That helps the coordination of the Vietnamese team at this time smoother, the players find each other more easily when there is a ball to coordinate, and find the opponent's penalty area more easily than before. In addition, it must be added that the AFF Cup championship helps the current Vietnamese players have more confidence. Once playing confidently, the players can perform their ball handling well."
Vietnam's new attacking formula
The fact that the Vietnamese team scored faster helps the team to have more calculations in terms of playing style and personnel in the next period of the match, after scoring an early goal. For example, in the match against the Lao team on the evening of March 25 at Binh Duong Stadium, after scoring the opening goal in the 11th minute, Coach Kim Sang-sik's players started to aim to score more goals against the team from the land of a million elephants, with the hope of having a good secondary index, to compete with the main opponent in Group F of the 3rd qualifying round of the Asian Cup, Malaysia, if unfortunately we need to use the secondary index in the next matches.

Defender Van Vi scored a goal effectively.
At this point, the Vietnamese national team's attacking system is no longer the same as in the AFF Cup. The team plays with more attacking options, which allows us to have enough players in attacking plays against the opponent.
Coach Phan Thanh Hung continued to comment: "Compared to the AFF Cup 2024, the Vietnamese team is now playing more diversely. Coach Kim Sang-sik pushed attacking midfielders such as Hai Long, Quang Hai (against Cambodia) and Chau Ngoc Quang (against Laos) very high up. They combined with the strikers to create a 3-striker playing style for the Vietnamese team against Cambodia and Laos. The full-backs are also encouraged to move up when there is an opportunity, helping the Vietnamese team's attack always put great pressure on the opponent."
Of course, Vietnam's early goals against Cambodia and Laos also stemmed from the fact that their opponents were considered weaker than them. But that's only an objective reason; the subjective reason still comes from the changes in the team under coach Kim Sang-sik. The team has changed both its approach and mindset, readily pushing forward in attack, and willing to rush into the opponent's penalty area from the start to hunt for goals.
