Boer goat breed grows fast, has a lot of meat

Goat farming in Huong Son district ( Ha Tinh province) has existed for a long time. In recent years, the demand for goat meat in the market has increased rapidly. Goat meat has become a specialty dish of the Huong Son mountainous region, so goat farming is increasingly interested in strong development.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, in Tay Nam village, Son Le commune, Huong Son district (with many years of experience raising goats), said: "The process of raising goats on local grass, small stature, low meat yield, especially having to have grazing land, difficult to control diseases, plus fluctuations in food sources, does not bring high economic efficiency.

In 2022, with the support policies created by the local government, the family was able to borrow capital and invest in building a goat farm with a barn area of 300m2 , buying 50 female goats and 3 male Boer goats at a cost of more than 500 million VND.

The Boer goat raising model is completely confined by Ms. Hien. The barn system is invested in and cleaned to ensure coolness in the summer and warmth in the winter, helping the goats grow well and limiting diseases.

According to Ms. Hien, Boer goats are not difficult to raise, easy to care for, have a fast growth rate, and a short raising time, so capital recovery is quick. Raising Boer goats does not cost much money, time and effort. You only need to spend about 1 - 2 hours a day to cut grass for the goats to eat, and the barn only needs to be cleaned 1 - 2 times a week.

To make the raising effective, in addition to understanding the characteristics, the breeder must know how to apply science and technology throughout the raising process. In particular, it is necessary to proactively provide clean food and water sources in winter and summer to ensure the nutrition of goats and limit the occurrence of diseases.

To proactively source food, after harvesting the grass, Ms. Hien composts it in sealed plastic containers at a ratio of 1 ton of fresh grass, 5kg of corn bran, 0.2kg of refined salt, 0.2kg of probiotics for about 20-30 days.

Fermented grass only provides food when fresh grass is scarce, and also increases nutritional quality and improves the health of goats.

Raising Boer goats effectively from the start, earning half a billion each year

"Thanks to good care, the Boer goat herd has high resistance, few diseases, stable output, and sells for a higher price than other livestock. From the initial 53 goats, the Boer goat herd has multiplied to 80, selling 200 meat goats, each weighing 20-25kg, selling for 120,000-130,000 VND/kg, bringing in a profit of over 450 million VND," Ms. Hien revealed.

Mr. Le Dinh Khoi - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Le Commune, Huong Son District said: "Since the introduction of the Boer goat breed to the locality, the economic efficiency has been much better than the previous grass goat breed. The local government has promoted and encouraged people to switch from raising local grass goats to raising Boer goats, thereby improving the quality and total herd of goats raised in the commune.

Currently, the whole commune has 460 households raising goats with a total herd of over 2,100 goats (of which, Boer goats account for more than half, large households have 50-80 goats, small households have 10-15 goats), bringing in an income of 500-700 million/year".

Mr. Phan Anh Chien, in Anh Son village, Son Ham commune, Huong Son district, shared: "At first, the goats bought from other places had not yet adapted to the local climate and did not have much experience, so they encountered many difficulties in the care process. The goats stopped eating and some had diarrhea.

By diligently studying and learning techniques and applying appropriate and timely treatment methods, the herd of goats has recovered.

After more than a year, the herd has produced 45 goats, selecting the best looking ones for breeding, the rest are sold for meat and have brought in an income of nearly 100 million VND. The advantage of Boer goats is that they have a short raising time and high economic efficiency. Each kid born, after 4-5 months of care, reaches 20-25kg, some up to 30kg.

Talking to Dan Viet reporter, Mr. Phan Xuan Duc - Director of the Center for Application of Science and Technology and Protection of Vietnamese Animals in Huong Son district, said: "In 2 years (from 2021 to 2022), Huong Son district will deploy 10 goat breeding models with a scale of more than 500 hybrid goats for breeding in Quang Diem, Son Lam, Son Tien, Son Le, Son Bang and An Hoa Thinh communes, using the method of crossbreeding male Bach Thao goats and male Boer goats with female Boer goats to produce F1 hybrids".

"Through monitoring and evaluation, the goat herd grows steadily and reproduces well, on average each mother goat gives birth to 2 litters every 3 years, each litter of 2-3 kids. Meat goats raised for 4-5 months reach an average weight of 25-30 kg, an increase of 30% compared to the weight of local grass goats. From the success of that model, many households have boldly invested in barns to raise Boer goats, bringing high economic efficiency.

In addition to the nearly 2,500 meat goats sold, Huong Son district currently has a total herd of over 14,000 goats. It is expected that by the end of the year, this number will increase to 17,000," added Mr. Phan Xuan Duc.

"The results achieved by the Boer goat breeding models as well as the bold investment of the people, the Center for Science and Technology Application and Vietnam Animal Health Protection of the district is checking and will have a specific assessment as a basis for advising the District People's Committee to propose to the Provincial People's Committee. Thereby, there will be support policies, continue to develop, improve the quality of the Boer goat herd in the area, create products to meet market demand", said Mr. Phan Xuan Duc - Director of the Center for Science and Technology Application and Vietnam Animal Health Protection of Huong Son district.
