Linking education with cultural preservation
Teacher Pham Hong Viet, Principal of Quang Tri Ethnic Minority Boarding High School, said: In order to preserve and promote traditional cultural values in the school environment, the school has implemented many educational models such as: Teaching associated with preserving national culture, organizing experiential activities on traditional themes, building a folk cultural activity club...
The school always integrates cultural education into subjects such as: Literature, Geography, History, Civic Education, Music, Local Education... to improve the quality of education, helping students understand, love and be proud of their national culture. The school also organizes many diverse cultural and sports playgrounds. Every year, at the Phu Dong Sports Festival, in addition to the main subjects (athletics, swimming...), the school also includes traditional sports such as tug of war, stick pushing, shuttlecock kicking... to compete, helping students practice health and preserve cultural identity.

Not only organizing activities in school, the school also creates conditions for students to participate in traditional festivals such as: Drum Beating Festival of the Ma Coong people, Minh Hoa March Full Moon Festival, New Rice Celebration Festival of the Bru Van Kieu people... This is an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the national cultural space, connect with their roots and feel more deeply the cultural values of their homeland.
In particular, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school has established a folk cultural activity club for students, which operates regularly every week. Under the guidance of teachers and artisans, students practice and perform folk songs such as singing "sac bua", "ho thuoc ca" (Chut ethnic group), playing gongs (Bru Van Kieu ethnic group)... The school also mobilizes social resources to purchase musical instruments and props such as gongs, drums, clappers... to serve practice and performance activities.
"Keeping the fire" of traditional culture
The folk culture club is not only a place to preserve and spread the beauty of folk songs but also to foster in students pride and a sense of responsibility in preserving the heritage of their ancestors. Cao Thi Dung (Chut ethnic group), a student of class 11B, Quang Tri Ethnic Minority Boarding High School, said: Thanks to participating in the club and learning from the artists, my singing voice and performance skills have improved day by day. Currently, I have performed many unique folk songs of my hometown Minh Hoa, especially the fish medicine singing and the charm singing.
Teacher Chu Minh Duong, the Club's Chairman, is always passionate about preserving ethnic culture. That love was kindled in his hometown of Quang Kim (now Phu Trach commune), where the famous Kieu singing melody is found, and was further nurtured when he participated in training courses on teaching and performing the intangible cultural forms of ethnic minorities.

Mr. Duong shared that, facing the reality that the majority of young people today only prefer modern music and pay little attention to traditional folk songs, the school is determined to maintain and develop the club, gradually sowing the seeds of love for traditional culture in students. From students who were reluctant to participate in activities, now many students know how to sing folk songs of their ethnic group. Some students were sent to attend training courses, equipped with singing skills, performing intangible cultural forms organized by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Not only teaching singing, Mr. Duong also collected and recorded many folk songs of ethnic groups for research and teaching. He cherished the plan to stage and perform excerpts of the Ma Coong drum beating festival suitable for students' ages right at school, at the same time creating many playgrounds for students of different ethnic groups to exchange and learn about each other's culture...
Teacher Pham Hong Viet said: In the coming time, the school will continue to closely coordinate with artisans in teaching folk songs to students, encourage and create conditions for students to participate in festival programs and cultural events organized by the province; at the same time, mobilize all resources to create the best learning, training and development environment for students.
Accompanying the Club from the very beginning is young artist Hoang Viet Anh (24 years old, Minh Hoa commune) - who has a sweet, rustic voice, full of folk music and is proficient in many traditional musical instruments. Not only directly instructing teachers and students in folk songs, he also devotes much effort to collecting, researching and preserving traditional culture.
His dedication was reciprocated by the students' interest and eagerness to learn. Many students even took advantage of their days off to come to his house to learn more folk songs. He also collaborated with veteran artist Dinh Thi Phuong Dong (Minh Hoa commune) to teach the fish medicine song to bring students richer and more comprehensive experiences about the unique folk culture of the locality.
According to artist Hoang Viet Anh, in order for young people to truly love and pursue traditional arts, teachers must know how to "pass on the fire", arouse in them love, pride and awareness of preserving and passing on the nation's cultural heritage. Once they have passion, they will learn on their own.
The tireless efforts of teachers and students of Quang Tri Ethnic Minority Boarding High School have brought about many encouraging results. Students are more confident and open in introducing their ethnic culture. Many students have performed folk songs well and enthusiastically participated in the school's programs and extracurricular activities, arousing the spirit of solidarity and pride in cultural roots in each student.
