Evaluating the English exam, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong, a teacher at HOCMAI Education System, said that the exam closely followed the structure of the reference exam that the Ministry of Education and Training announced in March 2023: 50 questions with a time limit of 60 minutes. The exam has a low level of differentiation compared to the official exam for the 2022 High School Graduation Exam. The knowledge units asked are mainly in the 12th grade English program, there are no new, strange questions, or extremely difficult questions, closely following the goals of the High School Graduation Exam.
Regarding knowledge content: Like every year, the exam tests knowledge of phonetics, grammar, vocabulary, communication functions, writing skills, reading skills - these are all familiar knowledge to candidates.
Regarding the difficulty of the exam, about 84% of the questions are at the level of recognition and understanding, and the rest are application and high-level application questions. The differentiation of the exam still focuses on vocabulary and inference questions of the reading comprehension passage. Grammar, vocabulary, error finding questions... are familiar knowledge, appearing frequently in the 12th grade high school curriculum, however, questions about idioms are still questions to get high scores (question 17 code 409); advanced vocabulary questions (question 8 code 409); vocabulary error correction questions (question 50 code 409), requiring candidates to have a rich vocabulary and understand many layers of meaning of words. Questions about words in the same semantic field also do not puzzle candidates like previous years' exams.
Reading comprehension with familiar topics about Communication and Work experience. Questions requiring high thinking are still questions about the title of the passage (questions 31 and 36 code 409), and inference questions (question 42). However, these questions are not too difficult, candidates can rely on information in the reading passage combined with the use of elimination methods to still be able to choose the option that is likely to be correct.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong, English is the final subject of the high school graduation exam and this is also the subject with the lowest results of all subjects for many consecutive years with the highest rate of below average scores. It is expected that the score distribution this year will be similar to 2022, with many 9+ scores concentrated in the D group of students or those choosing English as a university entrance exam subject, but there will not be many 10 scores.
Essay test scoring needs to be unified to create fairness and objectivity for candidates.
