At a scientific seminar themed "Applied Mathematics Training in the Data Age and Smart Decision-Making," organized by the National Economics University, Professor Ho Pham Minh Nhat, from the Institute of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, University of Texas - Austin, shared his insights on the pivotal role of applied mathematics in modern data science and decision-making. Professor Ho Pham Minh Nhat argued that in the data age, mathematics is no longer just a computational tool but has become the foundation for building models, algorithms, and artificial intelligence systems. Thanks to the power of applied mathematics, raw data is transformed into useful information, which in turn leads to strategic decisions, contributing to shaping the future of many fields from business, finance, and healthcare to public administration.
Experts believe that there is a clear shortage of data analysis and modeling skills in the current workforce, so it is necessary to strengthen the connection between training institutions and businesses to ensure that students effectively meet job requirements.
Sharing insights on the capabilities and training orientation of the Applied Mathematics program at the National Economics University, Dr. Le Anh Duc, Head of the Training Management Department, emphasized that Mathematics is a core subject, given special attention in the admissions and teaching of all majors. The role of Mathematics at the university extends beyond providing a foundation for all training programs; it is also evident in many specialized fields such as Data Science , Actuarial Science, and Risk Management.
Dr. Le Anh Duc affirmed that, with a team of lecturers in the Faculty of Basic Sciences who possess good expertise and qualities, along with a multidisciplinary and multi-field training ecosystem, the university has the capacity to open an Applied Mathematics major in the near future, and is also ready to develop higher levels of training.
Designed with flexibility to allow learners to choose specialized application areas that suit their interests and career aspirations, the program not only provides a solid foundation in mathematics but also focuses on applying mathematics to solve practical problems in diverse fields. A highlight of the program is the harmonious combination of: core mathematical knowledge (algebra, calculus, probability, statistics, optimization, modeling); modern technological skills (machine learning, big data analytics, simulation); and interdisciplinary application capabilities.
This field of study will train a new generation of "applied mathematicians"—those with a strong theoretical foundation and proficient in tools, ready to solve practical problems in diverse fields ethically and responsibly in the data age. They will be the silent architects building intelligent systems and effective solutions, contributing to the remarkable development of society and building national intellectual strength for decades to come.
