5 months of dull neck and shoulder pain, suddenly discovered a rare cervical meningeal tumor
For the past 5 months, Mr. K. Xayanone (65 years old, Lao nationality) has been experiencing constant pain, fatigue, and numbness in his neck and shoulders. Recently, the patient went to Vietnam to visit relatives.
During his stay, symptoms such as numbness in the limbs and sensory disturbances tended to worsen, affecting his mobility. Faced with the unusual health developments, his family in Vietnam quickly took him to Hong Ngoc Hospital for examination and discovered a 1.5cm cervical meningeal tumor.

“At first, the family thought that the neck and shoulder pain was due to old age or bone and joint problems. They were very surprised and confused when the doctor informed them that their uncle had a tumor compressing the spinal cord and needed surgery as soon as possible. After 2 days of discovering the tumor, the condition worsened, with signs of loss of sensation and weakness in the limbs. Therefore, the family decided to have surgery at Hong Ngoc Hospital,” said Ms. Thai, a relative of the patient.
The tumor occupied half of the cervical spinal cord from the cross-section of the cervical spine radiograph. |
Directly examining the patient, Associate Professor, Dr. Ha Kim Trung (Expert with more than 30 years of experience in neurosurgery and spine surgery - Hong Ngoc General Hospital) shared that cervical meningioma is a rare disease with unclear symptoms, easily confused with symptoms of spinal disc degeneration and herniated disc. MRI scan results showed that the tumor had compressed half of the spinal canal, causing the patient to have symptoms of numbness and weakness in the limbs.
This is a benign tumor, because the tumor is located outside the spinal cord and does not invade surrounding tissues or structures. The purpose of the surgery to remove the tumor is to relieve pressure, reduce numbness, and prevent complications such as loss of sensation and paralysis of movement for the patient.
To best prepare for surgery and control the risk of complications due to underlying diseases such as hypertension, hyperthyroidism, lipid metabolism disorders, etc., the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation has developed a multimodal anesthesia protocol before, during and after surgery. This protocol helps ensure physical stability, supporting a safe and effective surgery.

Surgery to remove tumor, escape from motor paralysis complications
Spinal cord tumor surgery is a highly technical procedure that requires a highly skilled surgeon with many years of experience. Because the spinal cord and nerves in the neck have a complex structure, even a small mistake can cause serious damage. Therefore, the surgical process needs to be supported by a modern equipment system and precise imaging technology to ensure maximum safety for the patient.
“The 3D C-arm machine helps surgeons accurately observe the location of the tumor, completely remove cervical meningeal tumors, minimize the risk of recurrence and avoid postoperative paralysis,” Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Ha Kim Trung shared.
The patient no longer had numbness and could walk normally after surgery for cervical meningioma. |
After more than 2 hours of surgery, the tumor was completely removed, without damaging the nerve roots, preserving the structure and function of the cervical spine.
“Fortunately, my uncle’s tumor was discovered in time by Dr. Trung and surgery was performed immediately. The surgery was successful, the numbness and burning sensation improved by about 80%, and he was able to move and walk normally. I feel that my decision to put my trust in Hong Ngoc Hospital was completely correct.
After a week of treatment, my uncle was discharged from the hospital and returned to Laos. We would like to send our sincere thanks to Dr. Trung and the entire medical team at Hong Ngoc Hospital,” the patient’s family shared.
Through this, Associate Professor Ha Kim Trung recommends that spinal cord tumors have quite discreet onset symptoms and the symptoms are not too obvious: neck and shoulder pain, numbness in the hands,...
As soon as the above symptoms appear, the patient needs to go to a medical facility with modern diagnostic equipment and a team of specialized doctors for examination, early detection of the disease, timely surgery, and to avoid serious complications that affect the quality of life.
Hong Ngoc General Hospital offers a special promotion with Associate Professor, Doctor, Doctor Ha Kim Trung: Free examination, consultation for spinal surgery and 10% discount on MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound as indicated. Make an appointment via hotline 0912 002 131.
