With an unprecedented level of competition, many predict that the admission scores for grade 6 at Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School will have many unpredictable fluctuations.
The entrance exam for grade 6 of Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School (before 2024, it belonged to Tran Dai Nghia Specialized High School) is one of the most competitive exams in Ho Chi Minh City for primary school students.
For many years, the entrance exam for grade 6 at Tran Dai Nghia School has consisted of 2 parts: multiple choice in English and essay with a total test time of 90 minutes.
Based on the results of the survey, the department will consider from high to low until the quota is met. Students who do not pass the school's 6th grade entrance exam will still be considered for 6th grade admission according to the regulations of the enrollment steering committee of districts in Ho Chi Minh City.
For many years, the entrance exam to grade 6 at Tran Dai Nghia School was only for excellent students who had completed primary school in Ho Chi Minh City; and had a score of 9 or higher on the final exam of grade 5 in Vietnamese and math.
In 2015, Tran Dai Nghia School abandoned the entrance exam for grade 6 and switched to another method according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training on not enrolling grade 6 students in specialized schools and classes.
The survey to enter grade 6 at Tran Dai Nghia School instead of the entrance exam was first conducted in 2015 with more than 4,400 students participating, with a target of 600 students.
2015 is also the year with the highest admission score in 10 years of organization so far (except for 2021 when the admission method was applied due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic) with a benchmark score of 71.15/100.
In 2016, the benchmark dropped to 57 and increased sharply to 65.25 in 2018. By 2019, the benchmark dropped to 48, which was also the year with the lowest benchmark to date.
In the last 3 years 2022, 2023 and 2024, the benchmark score for entering grade 6 at Tran Dai Nghia School has been increasing.
Over the past 10 years, due to the school's enrollment quota decreasing every year, while the number of candidates taking the exam has been increasing, the competition rate for grade 6 at Tran Dai Nghia Secondary and High School has become increasingly high.
The valedictorian with the highest score in the history of the entrance exam to Tran Dai Nghia School is Nguyen Thien Phuc, a student at Nguyen Thai Hoc Primary School, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City, with a score of 96.5/100 points in the 2024 exam.

Tran Dai Nghia Secondary - High School was separated from Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted in 2024 according to Decision 1657 of 2024 of the Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.
The separation from Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted is carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Lawon Education and the regulations of specialized schools, not allowing non-specialized classes to exist in specialized schools.
