What's special about this year's literature scores?

This ratio is almost equal to that of scores of 8 or higher. In fact, in many decks, the number of scores above 8 is greater than the number of scores below average.

The results of the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City are expected to be announced on June 20th.

Reasons why this year's literature exam scores were high.

The examiners offered several reasons for the low number of students scoring below average on this year's literature exam. Firstly, the exam questions "touched the hearts" of the students, sparking their interest in writing. Therefore, most students performed well, especially on the thought-provoking questions that encouraged self-expression, such as question 2 (thinking with your heart) and question 3 (connecting to life or literary works about family).

Secondly, the exam contained many clear and easy-to-score questions, such as questions a and b of the reading comprehension section and the analysis of the character Thu's feelings for her father (in Nguyen Quang Sang's *The Ivory Comb *, question 3, exam 1), or the analysis of the given or self-selected poem (question 3, exam 2). These questions were not tricky or designed to surprise the candidates. If students studied well and focused on the key points, they could easily score above 5.

Thirdly, many questions in the exam are practical and relate to real-world situations (question d in the reading comprehension section and the extended application in questions 1 and 2 of question 3). These questions are appropriate for the age group and very practical, relating to activities students have experienced in high school. For example, in question d (1 point) of the reading comprehension section, if a student can name a specific activity (0.25 points); explain the reason for choosing the activity logically (0.5 points); and express themselves well without spelling, word usage, or grammatical errors (0.25 points). Most candidates scored between 0.75 and 1 point on this question. This is quite different from previous years, when question d in the reading comprehension section was usually very difficult, and few candidates achieved full marks.

Another major reason is that this year's 10th grade entrance exam in Literature was relatively easy compared to previous years. This is the last year for 9th grade students studying under the 2006 curriculum, and they were somewhat affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in primary and secondary schools, so the exam was easier and did not cause stress or pressure for them.

Furthermore, another reason is the scoring rubric. The open-ended nature of the answer key allows candidates to easily choose how to express their opinions, thoughts, and feelings. This also makes it easier for examiners to grade.

According to many teachers, because the exam questions and answers were so clear, the examiners this year graded consistently, fairly, and with minimal discrepancies in scores.

Strict grading procedures

As in previous years, the grading of the 10th grade entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City is conducted rigorously. Examiners must be present as assigned; absences must be justified with a valid reason and a proper confirmation letter from the principal. Examiners must arrive on time; lateness will result in the gate being closed; and they must also leave at the designated time. All members involved in the grading process must wear identification badges when entering and exiting the gate.

Judges are not allowed to use mobile phones or smartwatches on the judging grounds, including during lunch breaks. Judges are not allowed to take their marking guidelines outside the premises. At the end of the judging period, all marking guidelines will be collected.

The grading process was organized into two independent rounds. A new feature was that the score entry department was located right in the grading room, making it very convenient for the grading teams. The examiners received thorough training (through a joint grading session), so the grading process was smooth, serious, fair, and followed the correct procedures and schedule.

Some examiners expressed their delight at the words of encouragement and support from the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training to the teachers grading the exams. Every year, examiners in Ho Chi Minh City receive thoughtful visits from the Department's leaders in each grading room. In a previous year, when the grading of the high school graduation exams took place during the Covid-19 pandemic, the leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training also sent a letter of thanks...
