What happens to your body when you drink soda every day?

Drinking soft drinks every day can have a number of distinct negative health effects, both short-term and long-term, affecting heart health, digestion, brain health, and weight control.

Although everyone knows that soft drinks are not nutritious drinks, but not everyone knows how much drinking soft drinks every day affects health? Is it worth worrying about?

The answer is yes and let's find out how your body will change if you maintain the habit of drinking soft drinks every day.

Short-term effects of drinking soft drinks every day

First, it’s important to know what soda is made of. Most sodas contain a combination of carbonated water, sweeteners (sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, or artificial sweeteners), phosphoric acid (which enhances flavor and extends shelf life), and natural flavors. Some also contain caffeine.

A typical can of soda contains an average of 155 calories, 38 grams of carbohydrates, 37 grams of sugar, and 34 milligrams of caffeine.

Meanwhile, the American Heart Association recommends limiting daily sugar intake to 25 grams for women and 36 grams for men — less than the amount of sugar in a can of soda.

Huffpost quotes nutritionist Sonya Angelone as saying that drinking soda every day will make you feel awake immediately thanks to caffeine and sugar. Caffeine blocks adenosine - a neurotransmitter that causes sleepiness - while sugar is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, creating a feeling of being full of energy. However, this feeling will quickly decrease, making you more tired.

Dr. Supriya Rao, an internal medicine and gastroenterologist, said that soft drinks also have an immediate impact on the digestive system. Carbon dioxide and sugar can cause bloating, gas, and even diarrhea or constipation if consumed regularly. The sugar in soft drinks feeds harmful bacteria in the intestines and weakens the intestinal lining.

Long-term consequences of drinking soft drinks every day

In the long run, the consequences go beyond stomach aches and low energy. According to Dr. Neil Paulvin, a regenerative medicine expert, daily consumption of soft drinks can easily lead to weight gain, especially belly fat - a dangerous type of fat because it is associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and breast cancer.

Not only that, soft drinks are also linked to kidney disease, high blood pressure and increased cholesterol.

Several studies have shown that both regular and diet sodas increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The brain is also affected. High blood sugar from drinking soft drinks increases brain inflammation, which in turn increases the risk of depression and dementia.

Diet soda: are they really safe?

Think you can avoid these consequences by switching to diet soda? Unfortunately, experts agree that the artificial sweeteners in diet soda can be just as harmful to your gut, heart, and brain. They’re no better than real sugar in terms of health.

How to cut down on soda effectively

If you want to cut back on soda, Angelone suggests asking yourself: What makes you crave soda so much? If it’s the caffeine, try sparkling coffee or canned matcha (check the ingredients to avoid sugar and sweeteners). If it’s the sweetness and fizz, try sparkling water with fruit or kombucha.

Some suggestions for easy-to-make detox water at home: cucumber and mint, blueberry and orange, pomegranate and lemon. Delicious and economical.

However, Angelone advises not to cut out caffeine abruptly, as this can cause headaches and fatigue. Cut back gradually to allow your body to adjust. Also, don't forget to hydrate and fuel up with healthy foods: Greek yogurt with fruit, for example, or whole-wheat toast with peanut butter.

Although it is not easy to give up the habit of drinking soft drinks every day, this is the right decision for long-term health. Start with small changes and be persistent, your body will thank you soon./.
