In addition to following the doctor's treatment regimen, people with gout also need to follow exercise and nutrition regimens to help improve their condition and avoid recurrence of acute pain attacks.

1. Diet for people with gout

Depending on each patient, there is a suitable diet. For people with acute gout, it is necessary to pay attention to the diet such as:

Do not drink alcohol during acute gout. Avoid foods in the high purine group. Moderately consume foods in the medium purine list. Eat foods in the low purine list every day.

Eat moderate amounts of protein. Good sources of protein are tofu and low-fat dairy products, with small amounts of margarine and eggs. Eat less meat, fish, poultry (maximum 150g/day). Drink 2 - 3 liters of water per day. It is recommended to use alkaline mineral water or 14‰ alkaline water. This will increase the amount of urine in 24 hours, helping to minimize the deposition of urate in the urinary tract.

Avoid fried foods and high-fat desserts, and limit added fats such as butter, margarine, oils and salad dressings.

In the period between acute gout attacks or chronic gout, you need to have a diet such as: Limit beer and alcohol consumption. If you drink, do not drink more than 1 unit of alcohol/day and 3 times/week. Limit the use of foods on the high purine list. Only eat moderate amounts of protein. Maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight or obese, you need to lose weight. Continue to drink at least 2 liters of water per day.

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by the deposition of urate salt crystals.

Foods gout patients need to pay attention to

- Foods gout patients should use

You need to eat a variety of foods to provide all the necessary nutrients. Rice, corn, pho, rice noodles, vermicelli, bread, tubers. Green vegetables such as squash, spinach... Sweet ripe fruits such as pears, apples, jackfruit, watermelon, strawberries, bananas...

Foods with low purine content such as cereals, butter, sugar, milk (choose low-fat milk), yogurt, eggs, tofu, cheese, vegetables, peanuts, sesame... If eating meat, only eat 100g for people with weight

Drinks containing bicarbonate such as mineral water, baking soda... For patients at risk of forming kidney stones, give them water mixed with 4g of sodium bicarbonate/1 liter of drinking water. Drink 2 - 3 liters of water per day.

Foods that gout patients should limit

People with gout should limit foods high in purines such as meat broth, sardines, mushrooms, asparagus, broccoli, eggplant, spinach (especially young leaves and sprouts), bean sprouts, animal organs such as liver, testicles, heart, etc.

Sour fruits such as sour oranges, green mangoes, plums, tamarinds, sour grapes, etc. should also be limited. Limit foods high in fructose such as sweet grapes, honey, sweet syrup, etc.

- Foods that gout patients should not use

People with gout should not drink alcohol or alcoholic beverages: Because it will increase blood lactate, reducing uric acid excretion through the kidneys. Should not drink coffee, tea... because caffeine is a trimethylxanthine that when oxidized (xanthine oxidase enzyme) will form methyl uric acid.

2. Lifestyle for people with gout

If there is pain in the acute gout stage, it is absolutely necessary to let the joint rest, because movement will release more urate salt crystals into the joint. The result is more painful swelling of the joint. It is best to lie down and rest or immobilize with a splint to help reduce pain better.

Once the pain is gone, gout patients need to have a work and lifestyle regimen appropriate to the painful joint condition. Overdoing it will cause the joint to deteriorate faster.

Patients need to lose weight and avoid obesity. Exercise gently and moderately. Exercise lightly but regularly. Avoid heavy work, overexertion, or strenuous exercise . Keep your body warm, avoid cold, and avoid getting wet in cold rain.

Keep your mind relaxed and avoid stress (stress is one of the factors that cause acute gout attacks). Soak your feet in hot water every night. You can do this regularly, but don't use water that is too hot, and don't soak your feet when you have acute inflammation.

3. Some other notes for gout patients

When preparing meat or fish, you should eat it boiled and discard the water. If you want to eat it stir-fried or fried, you should also boil it first if possible.

If you want to lose weight, you should also lose 0.5 - 1kg slowly per week, following a reasonable diet to lose weight. Do not follow a high protein diet to lose weight because it can make gout worse.

Avoid eating too much, especially at night, because heavy meals are a stress factor for uric acid formation. Drink enough water according to your needs (35 - 40 ml/kg body weight/day) because water will increase urine output and increase uric acid excretion.
