Djokovic defeats Alcaraz, rematches Sinner in ATP Finals final

Novak Djokovic ended a year of intense competition with Carlos Alcaraz in the ATP Finals semi-final, the world number one winning 6-3, 6-2 to reach the final.

Djokovic was at his best throughout the 88-minute encounter in Turin to claim his third win in four meetings with Alcaraz this year. The Serb used a deep-attacking style to great effect against the Spaniard, with Alcaraz having few opportunities to attack Djokovic and, having suffered three breaks, the world No. 2 was defeated in two sets.

"After spending so much time on the court in the first three matches, I didn't know how I would play tonight. Especially I wasn't sharp in the second and third games, but tonight from the start I felt the ball very well," Djokovic said.

I approached the match with the right attitude, the right mentality because I knew it would be very tense. Alcaraz had two break-points in the first game. Alcaraz started strongly, leading 40-15 in the first game against Djokovic, but the Serb kept his cool and saved the game. Alcaraz chased closely but made a mistake in the ninth game, giving Djokovic the chance to win 6-3.

A break in the third game of the second set put Alcaraz in trouble early. The Spaniard tried to rally but Djokovic did not let that happen. Successfully defending all his service games, Djokovic quickly won 6-2 when he broke again in the seventh game.

Djokovic will face Jannik Sinner in the final, the Italian beating Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1 in the first semi-final. Sinner beat Djokovic in the group stage and the Serb was cautious about his Italian opponent.

Djokovic said: "Sinner played in great form, probably the best form of his career. On this court, we played a tie-break in the third set in a tense match the other day. The atmosphere here was fantastic, really exciting. I didn't expect anything more than that, we could have produced a more exciting match than the group stage match."

"This is a final, I've been in this situation many times. I'm really happy with my ball feeling, the way I played, so hopefully I can play well tomorrow."
