Apple returned to the top 5 smartphone vendors in China in the third quarter of 2024, thanks to the launch of the iPhone 16.

According to data from research firm IDC, iPhone 16 sales surged in China, pushing Apple back to the No. 2 spot in the country's smartphone market in the third quarter of 2024, after falling out of the top five in the previous three months.

Specifically, Apple's iPhone sales accounted for 15.6% of the smartphone market in the third quarter in China, second only to Vivo's 18.6%. Although the latest iPhone models helped the "Apple" have better results than at the beginning of the year, its market share still decreased compared to 16.1% in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, Huawei's shipments jumped 42% in the quarter, taking 15.3% of the market share and ranking third, behind Apple. Data from IDC shows that this is the fourth consecutive quarter that the Chinese mobile company has posted double-digit growth. After being sanctioned by the US, Huawei has returned to the high-end smartphone market with a new generation of chips designed entirely in China. This has aroused patriotism among users in the billion-people market.

Xiaomi is now in fourth place with a 14.8% market share as shipments grew 12.8% year-on-year thanks to its focus on the low-end and high-end smartphone segments. Honor, a former Huawei sub-brand, is a close fifth with a 14.6% market share, despite its shipments falling 22.5% in the quarter.

In the second quarter of 2024, Apple was pushed down to 6th place in the Chinese market amid fierce competition with domestic rivals, behind Vivo, Huawei, Oppo, Honor and Xiaomi. This is the first time in many years that the "Apple" has dropped in one of its most important markets.

China, the world's largest smartphone market, saw shipments rise 3.2% to 68.8 million units in the third quarter of 2024, marking the fourth consecutive quarter of growth.

Amid increasingly fierce competition with Chinese rivals, the iPhone maker has rolled out many promotional programs for the iPhone 16 generation in China to boost sales.

Apple CEO Tim Cook also made his second visit to China this year this week, where he met with officials from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to discuss topics including the company’s growth in the Chinese market as well as cybersecurity and data.
