Alejandra Rodriguez made headlines around the world in April 2024 when she was crowned Miss Buenos Aires, becoming the first 60-year-old to win a pageant organized by the Miss Universe organization.
Hard to believe Alejandra Rodriguez is 60 years old
Although Rodriguez was unable to repeat her victory on May 25 to become Miss Argentina and earn the right to represent her country in the Miss Universe pageant, she did win the "most beautiful face" category and celebrated her breakthrough as marking the beginning of a change in how physical beauty is perceived.
“This is the first step of a change that is coming,” Alejandra Rodriguez, a lawyer and professional journalist, told CNN after the contest.
"I hope my participation in the contest will change many things. I think external beauty is always the top priority, I don't think choosing a beautiful woman is wrong, but perhaps the concept of beauty needs to be expanded," she said.
Rodriguez's participation only came about after the Miss Universe organization changed its age-related rules.
Until 2023, contestants must be between the ages of 18 and 28 (as of January 1 of the year they compete). From 2024, there is no age limit for all contestants.
“It’s a positive change,” Rodriguez said, adding that she was grateful for “the opportunity to be the first.”
The end of the age limit is just one of several rule changes the Miss Universe pageant is introducing in 2023 in an effort to innovate and attract more viewers and contestants.
The winner of the Miss Argentina contest on May 25 was Magalí Benejam (29 years old).
For the first time in its more than 70-year history, the Miss Universe organization also gave the green light to women who were married or divorced, had given birth or were pregnant to participate in the contest.
"There's a 40-year-old woman, another 37-year-old woman in the competition. It feels like the boundaries have been expanded. Women who are mothers can compete - something that was unthinkable in the Miss Universe pageant before," Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said that even though she did not have the honor of representing her country, stereotypes related to beauty, age, shape and weight are gradually changing.
The winner of the Miss Argentina pageant on May 25 was Magalí Benejam (29 years old) - a model and actress - who was considered too "old" to compete according to the regulations of the previous Miss Universe pageant. With this victory, she will hold the ticket to represent her homeland at Miss Universe 2024 taking place in Mexico.
