On the afternoon of May 18, in Malaysia, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) conducted the draw for the second qualifying round of women's football for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The 12 teams are divided into 3 seeded groups and drawn into 3 different groups.
According to the draw results, the Vietnamese women's football team is in Group C, along with Japan, Uzbekistan and India. Meanwhile, Group A of the tournament includes host Australia, Chinese Taipei, the Philippines and Iran, while Group B includes host China, South Korea, Thailand and North Korea.
According to the rules, the top 3 teams in each group will join the second-placed team with the best record to advance to the third qualifying round.
Among the opponents of the Vietnamese women's team (ranked 33rd in the FIFA rankings) in Group C, Japan is ranked 11th; Uzbekistan is ranked only 50th in the world, while India is ranked 61st.
The Japanese women's team is very strong, considered the number 1 seed in the group and almost certain to win first place.
The goal of Coach Mai Duc Chung and his team is to strive to win second place in the group, with favorable sub-indexes to be able to compete for a place in the next round as the second-placed team with the best record./.
