Vietnam's largest agricultural production delta is lacking high-quality human resources.

On June 16, the High-level Forum “ Science and Technology 4.0: Development Strategy for the Mekong Delta” was co-organized by CT Group, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) Ho Chi Minh City, Banking University Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology.

Mr. Tran Kim Chung - Chairman of CT Group Corporation shared at the forum that most people still do not fully understand the importance of the 4.0 technology revolution and how it affects all of humanity, and are not ready to master the future. In particular, the Mekong Delta is a low-lying area in both infrastructure and technology.

“Through this forum, we will together propose outlines of the most practically available technologies, introducing what we can do for the Mekong Delta in the short, medium and long term, so that the Mekong Delta can deploy according to a suitable roadmap for localities.

“Coordinating with leaders of major press and media agencies, we together create creative, new social activities with long-term value and high efficiency for the Mekong Delta, in line with the development policies and orientations of the region,” said Mr. Chung.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Trung - Principal of Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City emphasized that currently, in the Mekong Delta, the digital transformation process is still limited, with only a few small points initially participating. In particular, Mr. Trung mentioned the smart village model in Dong Thap province.

Mr. Trung said that smart villages are people-centered, aiming to improve the living environment, production and rural services. The smart village model is a new starting point, not a destination, it starts with small and useful things for the community.

“Smart villages are an inevitable direction for digital transformation in agriculture ,” said Mr. Trung.

Meanwhile, according to Dr. Phan Thanh Dinh - Vice Principal of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University, digital transformation in the Mekong Delta is currently facing difficulties in human resources. High-quality human resources and leading experts in the field of information technology in the Mekong Delta are still weak and lacking.

Some highly qualified experts are looking for opportunities in big cities. Therefore, the Mekong Delta is in great need of policies to attract talents and high-quality human resources, leading experts.

“Currently, a part of the population has converted and used modern equipment, but many people still have old farming habits, using primitive, outdated equipment and means, and traditional thinking,” Dr. Dinh commented on the production habits of some people in the Mekong Delta.

Sharing at the workshop, experts all agreed that the Mekong Delta is one of the most valuable deltas in the world, when nature has bestowed fertile and rich land with a mild climate, favorable for agricultural development, production and export of food, seafood and fruits, the largest in the ASEAN region.

This is also a giant granary, ensuring abundant food security for Vietnam and the world. But people here are still poor, having to go far away to seek a living, making a living in other provinces and cities such as Dong Nai, Binh Duong or having to work far away in countries such as Korea, Malaysia...

At the forum, managers, experts, scientists and businesses proposed a model that synchronously combines core technologies of Industry 4.0 and the green economic transition process.

These include pioneering projects such as: Carbon credits - agriculture - construction - green transportation...; digital transformation has the following areas: Artificial intelligence, data centers, smart cities, semiconductor technology, unmanned vehicles; circular economy has the following areas: Hydrogen energy, 5R; developing appropriate infrastructure and human resources.

Experts at the forum also emphasized the importance of applying green technology and joint solutions for sustainable development in the Mekong Delta. Alliance solutions between localities, research institutes, universities, and enterprises to take advantage of the capacity and strengths of all parties were also proposed.
