Speed up construction of "backbone" connecting shaft
According to the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV): When put into operation, most passengers will need to travel from Long Thanh Airport to Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa. In that context, the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway is considered the "backbone" traffic axis connecting Long Thanh Airport to Ho Chi Minh City in the first phase of operation.
With that role, this expressway has been proposed many times by ACV as well as Dong Nai province for the Central Government to soon invest in expanding the section from Long Thanh to Ho Chi Minh City.
On August 19, 2025, the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway Expansion Project of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway officially started construction.
According to Mr. Dang Hoai Nam, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC): The Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway Expansion Project is a key project in the transport sector, connecting Long Thanh Airport. The Prime Minister assigned VEC as the project's managing agency, implementing the investment in the form of an emergency construction project. Immediately after the groundbreaking, contractors are starting construction to basically complete it in 2026 under the direction of the Prime Minister. With the special nature of both designing and constructing, VEC is currently focusing all financial and human resources, coordinating with relevant agencies to complete the construction design documents to be implemented after the basic design for the project, meeting the contractor's construction progress on site.
A series of projects "racing" for progress
In addition to the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway, to serve the traffic connection for Long Thanh Airport, a series of expressway, beltway and provincial road projects have also been implemented in recent times. The common point of these projects is that they are all required to be basically completed by the end of 2025 and put into operation in 2026, in sync with the expected time of commercial operation of Long Thanh Airport.

According to Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vo Tan Duc: For the component projects of the Bien Hoa - Vung Tau Expressway and Ring Road 3 - Ho Chi Minh City projects assigned to the province for investment and construction, the Provincial People's Committee has requested the investor to implement solutions to speed up the progress to open the technical traffic before December 19, 2025.
Meanwhile, for the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway Project, VEC is currently directing contractors to speed up construction progress to complete construction and put the entire project into operation in 2026.
For Dong Nai province, in addition to projects implemented by the Central Government, the locality is also actively promoting the progress of provincial road projects to serve traffic connection for Long Thanh Airport.
Currently, the Provincial People's Committee has requested relevant localities to speed up the progress of site clearance for projects to upgrade and expand provincial roads 25B and 25C. At the same time, it requires investors to direct contractors to speed up the construction progress. The goal that Dong Nai province has set for these two projects is to basically complete construction by the end of 2025. Because according to the plan, these are two provincial roads that play a connecting role from Long Thanh Airport, through National Highway 51 to the Ben Luc - Long Thanh Expressway, Ring Road 3 - Ho Chi Minh City. From there, create more traffic axes connecting Long Thanh Airport to Ho Chi Minh City, sharing traffic pressure for the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway.
The Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway Expansion Project, with a length of about 22km, is being implemented in Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai Province. The project has a total investment of nearly 15 trillion VND.
In early September 2025, when inspecting the Long Thanh Airport Project Phase 1, Party Central Committee member, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha pointed out: The progress of Long Thanh Airport depends not only on the internal items, but also on the connecting traffic system. Therefore, the Ministry of Construction, Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai Province and relevant agencies must speed up the progress of infrastructure projects, including Ring Road 3 - Ho Chi Minh City, expansion of the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh Expressway, and connecting routes implemented by VEC and the Ministry of Construction. All of these projects have been committed to be completed by localities and units before Long Thanh Airport is put into operation.
