According to fish farmers, the current selling price of raw pangasius is between 32,000 and 34,000 VND/kg. At this price, farmers can achieve a profit of 5,000 to 8,000 VND/kg. Furthermore, the favorable market for pangasius products has helped both processing and export businesses and farmers achieve considerable profits.

Pangasius fish prices have remained stable at high levels recently due to scarce supply and strong market demand. However, the high price of fingerlings also poses many challenges for the pangasius industry. Many ponds in key farming areas are tending to be left empty as farmers worry about increased investment costs, especially the price of fingerlings and aquatic feed.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son, residing in An Huu commune, Dong Thap province, who owns a 3,000 m² pond for raising commercial pangasius fish, said that half a month ago his family sold 100 tons of pangasius at a price of 33,600 VND/kg. According to Mr. Son, the increase in fish prices has helped farmers improve their income and achieve considerable profits. However, he is also concerned that the price of aquatic feed often increases along with the price of fish; while the price of fish fry sometimes reaches 70,000-100,000 VND/kg, reducing the profits of farmers.

Not only has the price of raw pangasius remained high, but the production, processing, and export activities of seafood businesses have also been quite favorable recently thanks to maintaining traditional markets and expanding into new ones.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Nghia, Deputy General Director of Go Dang Joint Stock Company in My Tho Industrial Park, Trung An Ward, Dong Thap Province, said that in the first four months of 2026, the company exported more than 15,000 tons of various seafood products; the main product being pangasius fillet, achieving a value of nearly 40 million USD, a 25% increase compared to the same period last year. The main export markets include Europe, China, Brazil, the Middle East, Southeast Asian countries, and Africa.

According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Nghia, businesses must always proactively secure raw materials from their own farming areas to ensure stable production. Relying on external sources will lead to periods of surplus or shortage. Furthermore, controlling quality, especially regarding the use of chemicals in farming, is more difficult when sourcing raw materials from outside. Having their own farming areas allows businesses to regulate production volume and harvesting times for processing, Mr. Nguyen Huu Nghia stated.

To reduce costs and ensure a supply of raw materials for its eight seafood processing plants for export, the company has established 35 pangasius farming areas with a total water surface area of approximately 400 hectares in Dong Thap and Vinh Long provinces, producing about 90,000 tons per year, basically meeting the processing needs of the enterprise. Thanks to this, even with high prices and scarce supply of raw pangasius, the company still ensures sufficient production to serve its business operations.

According to relevant authorities, on average, each hectare of intensive pangasius farming can yield approximately 300 tons of raw fish. To achieve high efficiency and minimize disease risks, farmers need to apply a comprehensive set of scientific and technical solutions, select high-quality, disease-free fry, and properly manage the pond environment.

According to the leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province, in the coming time, the province will continue to support businesses and people in developing pangasius farming areas and other strong aquatic species; strengthen quality management of input and output factors; and support consumption connections to enhance the competitiveness of products.

Currently, Dong Thap province has over 2,600 hectares of pangasius farming area, mainly in areas owned by businesses and households with input and output linkages to processing businesses inside and outside the province. The estimated pangasius production in 2025 is over 595,000 tons, supplying more than 92% of the raw materials for export processing.

Recognizing pangasius farming as a strategic industry, Dong Thap province has focused on sustainable development and increasing added value through solutions such as strengthening production and consumption linkages, providing market information, digital transformation, and assigning identification codes to farming areas. The province has also implemented a project to link the production of high-quality pangasius fingerlings at three levels; and encouraged the formation of associations, cooperatives, and associations to create large-scale products with consistent quality.
