USD price today
The US Dollar Index (DXY) measures the greenback's fluctuations against six major currencies (EUR, JPY, GBP, CAD, SEK, CHF), recording at 103.63 points.
The dollar hit a two-week high last week after a sharp sell-off in November. Despite the current odds of a rate cut by the Federal Reserve next year, the dollar is likely to remain stable. The USD-Index is on track to gain 0.4% this week, ending a three-week losing streak.
If the US Federal Reserve (FED) cuts interest rates as the market expects, the outlook for the USD price will weaken.
According to the US Department of Labor, the US non- farm payroll added 199,000 jobs in November, a number larger than the previous forecast of 180,000.
The unemployment rate fell to 3.7%, suggesting the US Federal Reserve may not cut interest rates until the first quarter of 2024.
In Asia, the yen continued to strengthen, heading for its best week in nearly five months, as markets expect Japan's low interest rate policy to end soon.
Bank of Japan (BOJ) Governor Kazuo Ueda said he is considering operating interest rate policy after pulling short-term borrowing costs out of negative territory.
Markets took that as the clearest sign yet that the BOJ may soon phase out its ultra-loose monetary policy, sending the yen to a multi-month high. The yen narrowed to a range of 144 to 145 yen per dollar, falling as low as 141.60 yen per dollar at one point this week. Some of the yen's strength dissipated in European trading on Friday.
However, without further impetus from the BOJ, the yen could stall its gains, ending the week with a fourth consecutive weekly gain.
