DP World Tour rejects Ryder Cup 'hero''s' offer

VnExpressVnExpress20/09/2023

DP World Tour refused by regulation when Sergio Garcia offered to pay the full $866,566 fine to be on the European team that will compete in the 2023 Ryder Cup with the United States.

Garcia's move is seen as a last-ditch effort in hopes of earning another European cap at the world's most prestigious men's team golf tournament, which takes place this year at the Marco Simone course in Rome from September 29 to October 1.

According to the Telegraph , Garcia wants to pay the full fine to the DP World Tour and will compete in tournaments as designated by his former parent organization, except for matches that overlap with the LIV Golf League, owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), where he has been a member for more than a year.

However, this offer was rejected by the DP World Tour, as Garcia took the initiative to withdraw his membership card, announced in May this year. Because of this decision, he also lost the European selection for the 2023 Ryder Cup.

The debt between Garcia and the DP World Tour was formed when the Spanish golfer arbitrarily participated in the inaugural LIV Golf League in June 2022 and then joined the roster of this arena. In September of the same year, Garcia also blatantly skipped the BMW PGA Championship.

In the history of the European Ryder Cup, Garcia is considered a hero, holding the record for scoring points - 28.5 in 10 competitions, in which he won the championship with his home team six times. In the most recent tournament, as a guest in 2021 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, Europe was defeated 9-19 by the United States. But considering that time, Garcia and Jon Rahm - his junior Spanish compatriot - contributed to bringing home three points.

Garcia has been playing golf professionally since 1999, owning the 2017 Masters major among 11 PGA Tour titles and 16 cups on the DP World Tour. He has accumulated more than 450 weeks in the world's top 10.
