Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Nguyen Van Hung assessed that after two days of urgent, serious and highly effective work, the Conference completed the entire agenda, achieved many important results, and continued to affirm the role of sports as a bond of friendship, understanding and community spirit for a sustainable and prosperous ASEAN.

Over the past two years, as Chair of the ASEAN Sports Ministers Meeting, Vietnam and other member countries have strived to overcome many challenges and difficulties, maintaining connectivity and sportsmanship despite many fluctuations in the regional and global context.

Thanks to the close cooperation, support and accompaniment of ASEAN member countries and dialogue partners, we have effectively implemented many programs, initiatives and practical cooperation activities, contributing to promoting comprehensive sports development, while deepening the close relationship, trust and solidarity in the ASEAN Community.

Minister Nguyen Van Hung handed over the flag to transfer the role of Chairman of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports to the Kingdom of Cambodia.

"The results achieved in the past term are the most vivid proof of the spirit of cooperation and the will to move forward together, affirming that sports continue to promote the connection of peoples within the ASEAN bloc in friendship, understanding and sustainable development," said Minister Nguyen Van Hung.

Minister Nguyen Van Hung also said that, according to the rotating Chairmanship regulations, Vietnam respectfully hands over the role of Chairman of the ASEAN Sports Ministers Meeting to the Kingdom of Cambodia. This is not only a transfer of responsibility, but also a continuation of a journey of cooperation, trust and shared aspirations of the entire region.

Believing that, under the chairmanship of Cambodia - a country rich in cultural traditions, dynamic and hospitable - ASEAN sports cooperation will continue to flourish, spreading more strongly the values ​​of solidarity, understanding and sharing, Minister Nguyen Van Hung affirmed that Vietnam will always accompany, cooperate and support Cambodia to successfully fulfill this important responsibility, together nurturing the flame of ASEAN sports to burn brighter - the flame of friendship, respect, trust and aspiration to reach further.

"Today's moment not only closes a term, but also opens a new journey. That journey will certainly have many difficulties and challenges, but I believe that, with the spirit of "One ASEAN - One Vision, One Identity, One Community", we will continue to write bright new pages for regional sports," the Minister expressed his confidence.

At the ceremony, Minister Nguyen Van Hung handed over the hosting flag to Mr. Vath Chamroeun, Secretary of State, Ministry of Education , Youth and Sports of Cambodia, officially announcing that the Kingdom of Cambodia will take on the role of host at SOMS 17 and AMMS-9.

Mr. Vath Chamroeun expressed his deep gratitude to Vietnam - the host country for successfully organizing the AMMS-8 Conference, leaving many good impressions of professionalism.

On behalf of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Mr. Vath Chamroeun expressed his pride in continuing this important mission and pledged to promote sports for peace, friendship and solidarity in the region.

“The upcoming 9th AMMS will be held in Siem Reap – a city rich in culture and history, demonstrating the spirit of cooperation and solidarity of ASEAN. With deep gratitude, Cambodia is committed to hosting a meaningful and successful conference, bringing benefits to all ASEAN member countries,” Mr. Vath Chamroeun affirmed.

Sports contribute to sustainable development

VHO - The Vietnam Sports Administration has just held a press conference to provide information on the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Sports (AMMS-8) and related conferences in 2025. The conference is expected to welcome about 200 delegates, including Ministers, Deputy Ministers, heads of sports agencies of ASEAN countries and Timor Leste; ASEAN senior officials on sports; representatives of ministries and sports agencies of Japan, China and related international organizations.

According to Cambodia's report at the conference, AMMS-9 is scheduled to take place in November 2027, in Siem Reap. Along with hosting AMMS-9, Cambodia will host a sports tournament for traditional Cambodian sports.

At the handover ceremony, the Ministers and heads of delegations of ASEAN member countries highly appreciated the role of the host country Vietnam in thoughtful organization, flexible management and contributing many practical initiatives to the development of regional sports.

The AMMS-8 Conference is considered an important milestone, contributing to strengthening the ASEAN sports cooperation mechanism and opening up many cooperation prospects in the new period, from enhancing youth exchanges, training cooperation, to digitalizing sports management.
