AUSTRALIA - Many tourists are flocking to the city of Geelong, south of Melbourne, to witness the giant flower that blooms once a decade.
Amorphophallus Titanum (commonly known as Titan Arum) or "corpse flower" has a very erratic blooming time. Sometimes this giant flower only blooms once a decade, each bloom lasting 1-2 days, becoming an event that attracts a lot of tourists.
The plant was donated to Geelong Botanic Gardens by the State Botanic Museum in Adelaide in 2021. Since then, botanists have been watching and waiting for signs of new buds sprouting.
After many days of anticipation, the "corpse flower" in Geelong bloomed on November 11. According to Reese McIlvena, representative of Geelong Botanic Gardens, on the first day of blooming, about 5,000 visitors came here to see this rare sight with their own eyes.
Many tourists say the flower gives off a very unpleasant stench like rotting flesh. Experts say this scent is to attract pollinating insects. That is also the reason why Titan Arum is called "corpse flower".
Geelong Botanic Gardens is expected to be open 24 hours a day until November 12. Geelong Botanic Gardens will also be live-streaming the blooming process for those unable to visit in person.
“The Titan Arum is the world’s largest endangered corpse flower and its conservation is important as wild populations are declining,” said a representative of Geelong Botanic Gardens.
