Bringing Vietnam-Belgium relations to further development

President Vo Van Thuong affirmed that the State and people of Vietnam always attach importance to the relationship with Belgium and wish to develop the relationship between the two countries even more strongly.

On the afternoon of August 22, at the Presidential Palace, President Vo Van Thuong received President of the Belgian Senate Stephanie D'Hose, who is on an official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue.

On behalf of the State and people of Vietnam, President Vo Van Thuong warmly welcomed Ms. Stephanie D'Hose and the Belgian Senate delegation to Vietnam; emphasizing that the visit is very meaningful, taking place on the occasion of the two countries celebrating the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations and right on the occasion of the beautiful autumn weather in the capital Hanoi.

The President believes that the visit will open a new chapter in the cooperation between the Vietnamese and Belgian National Assemblies, and contribute to promoting positive development of bilateral relations in the coming time. The President affirmed that the State and people of Vietnam always attach importance to the relationship with Belgium, and wish to develop the relationship between the two countries even more strongly.

Vietnam thanks Belgium for supporting the Vietnamese people during the past struggle for national independence as well as in the country's construction and development today. Through the President of the Senate, President Vo Van Thuong respectfully sent his regards to the King and Queen of Belgium; said that he had sent an invitation and looked forward to welcoming the King and Queen of Belgium to Vietnam soon.

President of the Belgian Senate Stephanie D'Hose thanked President Vo Van Thuong for taking the time to receive her and expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome that Vietnam gave her and her delegation during their visit.

Informing the President about the good results from the talks and meetings with National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Vietnamese leaders, Ms. Stephanie D'Hose sincerely shared her impressions and attraction to the country and people of Vietnam.

“Vietnamese people are probably the most hospitable and friendly people in the world,” said Stephanie D'Hose.

Belgian Senate President Stephanie D'Hose said that after this visit, many delegations from Belgium will visit Vietnam with the hope of promoting cooperation and investment relations with Vietnam.

Ms. Stephanie D'Hose was pleased to announce that a Resolution is expected to be approved by the Belgian House of Representatives on supporting Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange/dioxin. The Resolution calls on the Belgian Government to promote efforts to provide additional aid to Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange/dioxin as well as support the Vietnamese Government in assisting victims of Agent Orange...

The President of the Belgian Senate expressed his hope that both sides would facilitate travel between citizens of the two countries to promote people-to-people exchanges, economic and trade cooperation, especially in the field of tourism.

Expressing his gratitude for the good feelings of the President of the Belgian Senate Stephanie D'Hose for the country and people of Vietnam, President Vo Van Thuong affirmed that the Vietnamese people are very sincere and hospitable; he believes that during her visit to Vietnam, the President of the Senate will meet and receive more warm feelings from the Vietnamese people.

Appreciating the talks and meetings between Senate President Stephanie D'Hose and National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, the two sides discussed many specific cooperation issues in bilateral cooperation. President Vo Van Thuong believes that these good results will open a new chapter in the relationship between the National Assembly and people of the two countries.

Delighted and touched by Ms. Stephanie D'Hose's announcement that a resolution is expected to be approved by the Belgian House of Representatives on supporting Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange/dioxin, the President emphasized that this is information of humanitarian significance; at the same time, he requested relevant parties to take responsibility with Vietnam to overcome the consequences of Agent Orange/dioxin in Vietnam.

To further strengthen the Vietnam-Belgium bilateral cooperation, President Vo Van Thuong suggested that the two countries increase the exchange of high-level delegations; saying that Vietnam is ready to welcome Belgian delegations to visit and work in Vietnam to promote cooperation in various fields.

Believing that although many results have been achieved in the cooperative relationship, the potential is still very large, the President suggested that the two countries further promote cooperation programs and projects in the fields of: Education, investment, trade, climate change response, digital transformation, green economy, etc.

In particular, the two countries need to further promote people-to-people and cultural exchanges, thereby enhancing mutual understanding and connection. The President affirmed that Vietnam supports and will continue to create favorable conditions for citizens of the two countries to travel, exchange and cooperate more conveniently in the future.

The President expressed his hope that, with the tradition of support and good coordination at international forums, the two countries would cooperate more closely on international issues; and asked Belgium to support the stance and viewpoint of ASEAN and Vietnam on the East Sea issue, including ensuring safety and freedom of navigation and aviation; and peacefully resolving disputes in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 UNCLOS.
