Don't do these things if you don't want to have a stroke

GĐXH – According to research, strokes tend to increase by 20-30% in the cold season. In particular, early morning, low temperatures combined with a number of factors are the times when strokes are likely to occur.

According to statistics, each year, about 12.2 million people in the world suffer from stroke, of which about 16% are young people from 15 to 49 years old. In Vietnam, every year, there are about 200,000 people suffering from stroke. Notably, in winter, when the weather is cold, the rate of stroke patients tends to increase.

Explaining this, Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Uyen, Emergency Department, 108 Central Military Hospital, said that a synthesis of many studies in the world shows that exposure to cold is a risk factor that promotes an increase in stroke, both hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke.

Some pathogenesis of this problem such as: Seasonal and temperature changes affect risk factors such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, high blood lipids, atrial fibrillation, increasing the risk of stroke.

In particular, according to experts, in winter, strokes often occur in the early morning. The reason is that when waking up in the morning, the body will change from a lying position to a moving position, changing the concentration of hormones.

These hormones cause two conditions, the first is increased heart rate and blood pressure, the second is increased arterial tone. When blood pressure increases, the heart muscle's oxygen demand increases, making the heart muscle unstable, increasing the risk of damage to atherosclerotic plaques.

If atherosclerotic plaques rupture, they will activate platelets, causing blood clots that block cerebral blood vessels, leading to acute ischemic stroke.

Things to note when waking up to avoid the risk of stroke

Do not open the door to the cold suddenly

According to Oriental medicine, stroke is called stroke. Stroke is caused by internal and external wind. In some people, especially the elderly, people with underlying diseases, high blood pressure, the main cause is internal wind, that is, when the body is weak, the internal organs are no longer functioning in balance.

External wind is an external factor such as weather, windy and cold. Therefore, when waking up early and going out in the cold weather suddenly, it is easy to be affected by external wind, leading to stroke.

Don't exercise too early

According to Dr. Doan Du Manh, Vietnam Vascular Association, one of the mistakes when exercising in the cold season is exercising too early. Because in the early morning, the body is in a warm blanket, going out in the cold can cause blood vessels to suddenly constrict, causing high blood pressure.

Moreover, early morning is also the time when the body is in a resting state, blood is concentrated, if at this time high blood pressure due to exposure to cold air will increase the risk of cerebral hemorrhage (cerebral hemorrhage) or thrombosis.

In fact, in April 2023, the Stroke Center, Phu Tho Provincial General Hospital received a 53-year-old male patient who suffered a stroke after morning exercise.

According to the family, at around 4am on the same day of admission, the patient got up to exercise as usual. After 30 minutes, the patient suddenly had difficulty speaking and weakness in the left side of his body, so he was taken to the emergency room. At the hospital, the patient had a CT scan of his brain, which showed a brain hemorrhage. Fortunately, the patient was still conscious.

Do not take a bath right after waking up.

When you first wake up, your blood vessels are still constricted due to the cold, affecting blood circulation and increasing the risk of blood vessel blockage leading to myocardial infarction. Therefore, you should avoid bathing at this time.

In cold weather, it is best to bathe between 9:30-10:30 and 1-4pm. This is the time when the temperature is highest during the day. Bathing will help the body adapt quickly, reducing the risk of sudden hypothermia causing low blood pressure and stroke.

How to protect your health in cold weather

According to experts, to protect health during the cold season, it is important to keep the body warm, eat nutritious foods and exercise properly and scientifically to improve resistance.

In the early morning when you wake up, you should not suddenly go out but should open the door slightly, warm up your body first so that it can gradually adapt to the temperature. Then go out.

For those who have the habit of exercising in the morning, it is necessary to warm up the body thoroughly to ensure safety. For those with high blood pressure, do not exercise when blood pressure is high. During this process, if you notice any abnormalities in your body, you need to stop exercising and rest.

People with underlying medical conditions and the elderly should only exercise when the sun is shining because the air is warmer. Exercise moderately and do not exercise when the weather is too hot or too cold.

In addition, wear enough warm clothes to ensure that your body does not catch a cold. In addition, drink warm water after waking up and before going out to exercise to replenish enough water for your body, increasing circulation.

In cold weather, how to bathe to avoid the risk of stroke? In cold weather, how to bathe to avoid the risk of stroke?

GĐXH – According to doctors, bathing late at night or bathing in cold water cannot directly lead to cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage. However, sudden changes in body temperature and some other causes can lead to stroke when bathing late.
