On the afternoon of June 30, the Vietnam Sports Administration held a discussion: "Sports and women in the era of striving towards sustainable development".
Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen - Deputy Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training - chaired the discussion, with the participation of many speakers who are sports managers, female sports entrepreneurs, athletes, and famous sports coaches of Vietnam.
In October 2025, Vietnam will host the 8th ASEAN Sports Ministers Meeting (AMMS 8) and the 16th ASEAN Senior Sports Officials Meeting (SOMS 16). During the two main meetings, the 5th ASEAN + Japan Sports Ministers Meeting (5th AMMS + Japan) and the 8th ASEAN + Japan Senior Sports Officials Meeting (8th SOMS + Japan) will also take place.

At the important conferences hosted by Vietnam, Japan and ASEAN countries will focus on areas of enhanced cooperation until 2030 through sports such as: Japan updates progress and future directions in the ASEAN-Japan Sports Cooperation Framework to 2030; Project to promote the participation of women and girls in sports; PhysicalEducation (PETE) and Sports for People with Disabilities (SPD); ASEAN Sports Plan 2026–2030...
The Gender Equality in Sports Project focusing on promoting the participation of women and girls is one of Japan's key and prominent projects with ASEAN countries, including the active participation of Vietnam.
Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen said: "Women play a very important role in the development of the country's sports, improving the quality of people's lives. In recent times, the achievements of women's sports teams and female athletes have brought glory to Vietnamese sports such as: the national women's football team, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team, athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh, swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, tennis player Nguyen Thuy Linh...
With the important role of women in society, especially the contribution of female athletes, female coaches and female leaders to the development of the sports industry, the Department of Physical Education and Sports organized a discussion: "Sports and women in the era of striving, towards sustainable development". The discussion is an opportunity for speakers to discuss and contribute to building preferential policies for women in the field of physical education and sports".
Attending the talk, athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh emotionally shared her journey from a rural girl in Bac Giang , overcoming many difficulties, to becoming the number 1 track and field athlete in Vietnam and a "fear" for Southeast Asian opponents.
Oanh said, overcoming gender prejudices, overcoming challenges, women should do everything they want to assert themselves. With sports, if not a professional athlete, each woman should choose a suitable sport to practice to be healthy, beautiful, confident, and always shine.

Ms. Tran Thuy Chi - Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Vietcontent Company, said that according to statistics in the world, 60% of female athletes have difficulties with their careers after retirement and 70% have financial problems. Therefore, it is necessary to find solutions for athletes after retirement, such as creating a policy mechanism to support female athletes. Help them to be trained, have a working environment, and participate in the sports economic market after retirement.
Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF), Ms. Nguyen Thanh Ha, presented many figures showing that equality has been paid attention to and promoted in Vietnamese football. Many policies to develop young female players have been implemented by the VFF, AFC, and FIFA.
After retiring, many Vietnamese female players have become professional football referees and coaches. One coach of Vietnamese women's football has been awarded a Pro certificate - the highest certificate of AFC. Some Vietnamese female FIFA referees have been assigned to work in prestigious tournaments around the world organized by AFC and FIFA.
