The hot weather that has lasted for many months now has been favorable for salt production in Thanh Phong, a coastal village in Tan Thuan commune, Ham Thuan Nam district. Thanks to this, salt farmers here have a good income from this traditional profession.
Clean salt spread on canvas for sale at the foot of the field
This early May afternoon, the hot, sultry sun seemed to surround everywhere, but in the salt production field of Thanh Phong village (Tan Thuan commune, Ham Thuan Nam district), many people were still hurriedly raking salt into piles, putting salt in bags, gathering at the foot of the field under tarpaulins waiting to be sold. Along the red asphalt road near the foot of the field, we happened to see a few young men quickly carrying each bag of salt onto a truck with a Ninh Thuan license plate parked there. Mr. Vo Ta Thanh, with dark skin and a sweaty face, also smiled and answered quickly when we asked. Mr. Thanh said that this season, his whole family had put the entire 1.5 ha area into salt production; harvested more than 180 tons/ha; the selling price at the foot of the field was 1,100 VND/kg; after deducting expenses, the income was quite good. Thanks to the prolonged hot weather, it was favorable for the salt industry.
Gradually restore the salt industry
Through research, we learned that in previous years, due to low salt prices, difficult lives for salt farmers and cooperative members, many areas were abandoned and severely degraded; while people did not have capital to invest in aquaculture. “From 2019 to now, Thanh Phong village has put into production 48 hectares, accounting for more than half of the salt-making land area of the whole village (92 hectares). Even Thanh Phong Salt Cooperative only produces about 22 hectares, the remaining 26 hectares are made by the people themselves. Members of Thanh Phong Salt Cooperative are also divided into 5 groups (or teams) for production, reducing some intermediate steps, increasing profits. These groups invest capital to renovate salt fields, embankments, and dredge canals to bring seawater into the salt production season. Along with that, Tan Thuan Commune People's Committee has coordinated with local organizations such as farmers and women to find bank loans to support other salt farmers in the village to invest in upgrading salt fields, reduce transportation costs, and increase income in the clean salt production season. The commune also promotes calling on salt processing facilities inside and outside the province to support salt farmers in producing clean salt in a chain, linking product consumption, increasing the value of salt grains, and increasing stable income for salt farmers. life, developing traditional occupations in the locality with nearly 3 km of coastline", the head of Thanh Phong village added.
Discussing more about the salt crop that is "doing well" here, Mr. Vo Van Thoang, Head of Thanh Phong village happily said: "This year, the prolonged hot weather and strong winds increase the salinity, the time for salt crystallization is fast; about 7-8 days to harvest a batch of salt, 4 batches a month. By the beginning of May, salt farmers in the village have harvested an estimated output of over 8,000 tons of salt/48 hectares put into production, with an average yield of nearly 140 tons/ha; about 20 tons/ha higher than the same period last year. With the price that traders buy salt from salt farmers in the field at 1,100 VND/kg. In total, the 48 hectares of production of the cooperative and salt farmers in Thanh Phong village have brought in more than 7.2 billion VND. After deducting expenses, on average 1 hectare of salt production brings in a profit of more than 120 million VND; salt farmers in Thanh Phong are having a stable income, creating jobs for more than 200 workers in the locality. The model of producing clean salt spread on canvas is currently being bought on the market in Thanh Phong by establishments and businesses in Ninh Thuan and Ba Ria - Vung Tau . At the end of the year, people in Thanh Phong village renovate their fields to invest in shrimp farming, earning more income.
