The border closure, in coordination with immigration authorities, will be in effect until February 10 as part of emergency security measures.
Since February 3, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa, who is seeking re-election, has ordered the border closed in response to alleged destabilization efforts by armed groups. He has also ordered increased security along the border, increased patrols at seaports and rivers, and aerial surveillance of airports and private airstrips.
Ecuador's armed forces have been implementing these measures since the beginning of the week and confirmed on social media that they are conducting military operations across the country to protect national security and sovereignty.
In the general election on February 9, more than 13.7 million Ecuadorian voters will cast ballots to elect a president, vice president, 151 members of Congress and five representatives of the Andean Parliament for a four-year term.
Since February 7, Ecuador has entered a period of pre-election silence, allowing voters to consider carefully before going to the polls.
