“Robots will surpass the best human surgeons in the next few years and outperform even the most skilled doctors within five years,” the Tesla boss wrote in a post on social network X on April 28.
“Neuralink has to use robots to insert electrodes into the chip implanted in the human brain, because normal humans cannot achieve the necessary speed and precision,” Mr. Musk cited an example of robots soon “dethroning” surgeons.
In March 2024, Neuralink shocked the world when it announced that it had successfully implanted a chip into the human brain, allowing users to control computers with just their thoughts.
According to information posted on Neuralink's website, the threads used for the implant are "so thin that they cannot be manipulated by human hands," and their surgical robot is designed to implant these threads into the correct position with optimal precision.
However, the technology suddenly encountered problems several weeks after implanting the chip into the brain of the first patient, Noland Arbaugh.
In September 2024, the fibers with electrodes that play a role in transmitting signals located in the brain tissue showed signs of withdrawing from that tissue, affecting the device's operating mechanism.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Neuralink said about 15% of the ultra-thin threads implanted in Arbaugh's brain are still intact to this day.
In response to Mr. Musk's ambitious announcement, Utah Republican Senator Mike Lee commented that the billionaire's statement sounded like "a declaration of victory for the man himself."
