34,128 spectators - a record number in the history of the Women's Euro - were present at St. Jakob-Park Stadium (Basel, Switzerland) in the early morning of July 20 to witness the dramatic battle between the two top candidates Germany and France in the final quarter-final match of Euro 2025.
The battle between two European "big sisters" is extremely dramatic
The record eight-time European champions were down early on but held firm throughout the 120 minutes, before winning 6-5 in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout thanks to the skills of "spider-woman" Ann-Katrin Berger.
The heavy 1-4 defeat in the final group stage match against Sweden left a psychological scar on each German player, who was considered a strong candidate for the championship this time. The French team was too strong with three consecutive wins in the group stage, making Germany even more worried before the life-and-death battle.
Kathrin Hendrich (3) received a red card for grabbing an opponent's hair in the penalty area.
The worry was not unfounded when, in the 13th minute, center-back Kathrin Hendrich swung her arm and pulled Mbock Bathy's hair, causing her to pay the price with a red card and the German team was awarded a penalty. Captain Grace Geyoro made no mistake in opening the score for France.

With the advantage in numbers and the lead, the blue team proactively pushed up their formation, continuously putting pressure on goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger's goal.
However, coach Christian Wück's team did not let the game get out of control. In the 26th minute, from a corner kick by Klara Bühl, midfielder Sjoeke Nüsken chose the right position and jumped high to head the ball to equalize 1-1 for the German team.

From then on, the German girls played a resilient defense, persistently fending off successive attacks from France. Before the first half ended, French striker Cascarino put the ball in the German net in the 40th minute, but was caught offside.

Not only that play, in the second half, France was again denied a goal due to offside even though Geyoro had scored the rebound.
It was the Germans' turn to celebrate in vain. In the 68th minute, Brandt earned a penalty after a foul by Bacha, but Sjoeke Nusken was correctly guessed by goalkeeper Peyraud-Magnin and the ball was blocked.

After 120 minutes of play, the two teams had to decide the winner by a penalty shootout. Here, the German team's mettle once again showed. Goalkeeper Berger not only blocked two French shots but also successfully took the fifth kick for his team.
In the end, Germany won 6-5, thereby spectacularly winning a ticket to the semi-finals, opening up the opportunity to compete for the 9th championship title.
