Como is growing. |
After helping Como return to Serie A for the first time in 21 years and finish the 2024/25 season in 10th place, 18 points above the relegation zone, Fabregas is not stopping at survival. He wants to turn Como into a team with real ambition.
Fabregas' reputation has put him on the radar of Inter, Roma, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig. Two Serie A Coach of the Month awards (April and May) are a testament to his managerial ability. However, Fabregas chose to stay at Como.
“I listened to the invitation, but not because I wanted to leave. I love football, I like to learn and observe how other teams operate, but I never doubted where I belonged,” he told Movistar+.
This decision reflects the desire to build a long-term project. Fabregas understands that Como cannot be satisfied with staying in the league forever: “We need to consolidate our strength, then think about the leap. Who knows, the opportunity may come this season.”
Notably, he also hinted at the possibility of recruiting Lionel Messi: "Never say never." Although it sounds vague, that statement shows that Fabregas wants Como to become an attractive destination.
In the summer of 2025, Como spent 101.5 million euros on 9 quality new players: Jesus Rodríguez (22.5 million from Betis), Nicolas Kuhn (19 million from Celtic), Martin Baturina (18 million from Dinamo Zagreb), Jayden Addai (14 million from AZ Alkmaar), Maximo Perrone (13 million from Man City), Álex Valle (6 million from Barcelona), Ignace van der Brempt (5 million from Salzburg), along with Luca Mazzitelli and Fellipe Jack. In addition, Jacobo Ramon from Real Madrid also joined on loan.

Coach Cesc Fabregas helps Como transform. |
This large investment shows that Como is no longer a “bottom-line” team. Fabregas wants to create a young, hungry and quality team capable of playing modern, energetic football.
Impressive pre-season form confirmed the direction of the team. Former Zaragoza striker Ivan Azon scored back-to-back goals, netting a brace as Como beat Lille 3-2, then scored again in a 3-1 defeat of Al Ahli in the Como Cup semi-finals. In the final, Como crushed Ajax 3-0 thanks to goals from Nico Paz, Douvikas and Baturina.
Jayden Addai, the 19-year-old Dutch winger, was so outstanding that La Gazzetta dello Sport described him as “unstoppable” on the right flank. Jesús Rodriguez also made a strong debut, setting up Baturina to make it 2-0 against Ajax with his first touch.
The upcoming friendlies against Betis and Barcelona at the Gamper Stadium will be a real test for Como, but with their current form and spirit, Fabregas and his players have reason to be confident.
“I want to leave a strong legacy. So that my successor can see a mature Como with a rich identity,” Fabregas emphasized.
Looking at the way Fabregas is building the team, we can see the shadow of a bold strategist, daring to experiment and knowing how to exploit the player's potential to the fullest. From a rookie who was once underestimated, Como is no longer an easy "prey". They are becoming a phenomenon, even a threat to the big teams in Serie A.
For Fabregas, Como don't just want to survive - they want to compete. If this momentum can be maintained, Serie A could see a new force in the next few years.
