"Kenya street party and Vietnam's disappointment", that was the headline on Volleyball World - FIVB's homepage after witnessing the Kenyan women's volleyball team defeat Vietnam with a score of 3-0 (the scores of the sets were 25-23, 25-22, 25-18) in the final round of Group G of the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Championship held in Thailand on the evening of August 27.

After two defeats against higher-class opponents Poland and Germany, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's team entered the final match against Kenya with the goal of winning an honorable victory in their first participation in the Women's Volleyball World Championship.

However, the Vietnamese players did not start well and were always in a chasing position in all 3 sets, only to quickly accept defeat.

"There was a big Kenyan party on the field after the African team beat the Vietnamese women's team with a direct serve from captain Meldinah Nemali Sande, scoring the decisive point in the final match of the 2025 Women's Volleyball World Cup in Thailand.

In the final Group G match, Kenya threw a huge street party with 21 dishes to celebrate their first World Cup win against an Asian opponent.

In each previous tournament, Kenya won one match, against Mexico in 2018 and against Cameroon in 2022. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese women's team had to accept 4th place without a single win in their first participation in the world championship," FIVB commented in the content section.

Notably, FIVB praised the excellent performance of main striker Veronica Adhiambo, who scored 19 points for Kenya, the most in the match, including 3 blocks and 1 direct score.

Meanwhile, main striker Vi Thi Nhu Quynh was Vietnam's most effective scorer with 12 points. However, captain Tran Thi Thanh Thuy - the most expected player in the Vietnam team - did not play really well in this match and saw her team lose the match.

“The lesson we learned from this is that anything is possible. We just need to stay focused and we can win big games,” Kenya head coach Geoffrey Omondi Onyango told VBTV after the win.
