Nearly 100 children received free cleft lip and palate surgery

The Program's doctors have screened nearly 130 patients with cleft lip and palate, with nearly 100 patients eligible for surgery.

On November 19, Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital ( Hanoi ) coordinated with Operation Smile to implement the Smile Surgery Program for nearly 100 children with cleft lip and palate.

Taking place from November 19-22, the program marks 35 years of cooperation between the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital and Operation Smile, while strengthening the connection between the hospital and the global humanitarian organization in the journey to bring smiles and new hope to patients with cleft lip and palate.

Previously, on November 18, the Program’s doctors screened nearly 130 patients with cleft lip and palate, with nearly 100 patients eligible for surgery. Notably, many children came from the northern mountainous provinces, the central region, remote areas, and ethnic minority children in difficult circumstances.

All eligible patients will be assigned surgery and treated according to Vietnamese medical standards and global standards of care. The Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital also provides partial financial support for patients with cleft lip and palate who require high-tech, high-cost treatment. Nearly 100 doctors, nurses, medical staff of the hospital and volunteers of Operation Smile participate in this humanitarian program.

Doctor Cao Duc Chinh - Director of Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital said that in the 35 years of cooperation and companionship with Operation Smile, the hospital has performed nearly 18,000 lip-palate surgeries, on average each year the hospital coordinates to organize 5-6 surgical programs and screen and perform surgery for about 600 patients.

Operation Smile has supported the hospital in renovating and upgrading its infrastructure, especially the operating room area; providing medical equipment, supplies and on-site training, and sending doctors and nurses to attend training courses abroad. In the coming time, the hospital will continue to cooperate with Operation Smile in implementing comprehensive treatment for patients with cleft lip and palate.

On this occasion, the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital officially launched the Comprehensive Treatment Unit for Cleft Lip and Palate to meet the care and treatment needs of patients./.
