- Established in 2018, the Intergenerational Self-Help Club of Man Duong village, Mai Sao commune, Chi Lang district is not only a place to connect generations but also becomes a support for the elderly and disadvantaged households in the journey to improve the quality of life.
In 2022, Ms. Vi Thi Voi (born in 1965) was supported by the Intergenerational Self-Help Club of Man Duong village to borrow 10 million VND with low interest rate to invest in economic development. Combined with a number of other preferential credit channels, she invested in a rabbit farming model. Initially with 150 mother rabbits, she has now expanded to nearly 1,000 rabbits, selling 6 litters per month, each litter from 30 to 70 rabbits, bringing in an average income of about 20 million VND/month.
Sharing with us, Mrs. Voi confided: At first, I was hesitant because I had never raised rabbits before. But with enthusiastic encouragement from the club members and technical help, I boldly did it. Rabbits are easy to raise and have a quick capital turnover. Now my family's economy has improved significantly.
Currently, the club's operating fund has about 61 million VND, mobilized from contributions from members, benefactors and revolving profits. From 2018 to now, the club has lent capital to nearly 30 members at low interest rates. In addition to lending, the club's Board of Directors has oriented production development based on the specific conditions of each household. Each member receiving capital is trained in techniques and has someone to closely monitor and provide initial support.
In addition, the Club also organizes life skills training, health care, and visits members when they are sick. Ms. Vi Thi Binh, Club President, said: Since its establishment, the Club's Board of Directors has clearly defined its operating motto: promoting the role of the elderly, connecting the community, supporting each other to overcome difficulties, and building a healthy cultural life. With 62 members of different ages, of which people over 55 years old account for more than 60%, the Club organizes regular monthly activities, focusing on 6 groups of content: health care, economic development, caring for spiritual life, protecting members' rights, community activities, and building a strong organization.
Notably, the Club's Board of Directors has coordinated with the commune health station to organize medical examinations and health consultations for 100% of the Club's members. In particular, from 2018 to present, the Club has organized nearly 700 members to have their eyes examined at the DND International Eye Institute of Bac Giang province.
Another highlight of the Intergenerational Self-Help Club in Man Duong village is its ability to connect the community through cultural, sports and volunteer activities. From organizing cultural and sports exchanges to helping each other during the harvest season, repairing village roads after storms and floods, building bridges for people... it has created a strong spirit of solidarity and sharing in the village. Since its establishment, the club has coordinated to organize 9 cultural and volleyball exchanges attracting over 100 members; contributed over 1,000 laborers, over 30 million VND to pour concrete on village and hamlet roads, build bridges over streams; contributed over 100 laborers, over 15 million VND to repair the village's concrete road that was eroded due to the impact of storm Yagi...
Ms. Hoang Thi Toan, President of the Elderly Association of Chi Lang District, commented: The Intergenerational Self-Help Club of Man Duong Village is one of the most systematic, creative and effective clubs in the district. The activities of the Club have become a bright spot in the movement to build a sustainable community, contributing significantly to the construction of new rural areas, improving the lives of the elderly and being the nucleus connecting the village community.
With outstanding achievements, the Intergenerational Self-Help Club of Man Duong village was awarded a certificate of merit by the Provincial Association of the Elderly. In particular, in May 2025, the Club was honored to receive a certificate of merit from the Central Association of the Elderly of Vietnam for "having outstanding achievements in implementing the Project to replicate the Intergenerational Self-Help Club model for the period up to 2025 according to Decision No. 1336/QD-TTg dated August 31, 2020 of the Prime Minister".
