21-day random notes independent of modern life

In today’s modern life, what would happen if we went for 3 consecutive weeks without using money, phones, or computers? These days can only be described as “heavenly life”.

Inseparable objects

In the current era of rapid technological development, most people's lives are inseparable from things like phones, computers, and money. Observing life around us, it is easy to see images of many toddlers being given smartphones by their parents to stop crying.

Sipping a cup of coffee on the deck is a rare moment amidst the hustle and bustle of today's work.

Many other teenagers, outside of class and homework, spend most of their time glued to their phones. In coffee shops and parks, it is not difficult to see groups of young people, five or seven, constantly tapping away at their phones, playing games, or focusing on social networking sites.

Businesses, officials, civil servants, and public employees also find it difficult to stay away from these modern devices, because they have to constantly update information, current events, and handle work... Many people do not only use one phone or laptop, but own two or three smartphones at the same time to meet their work needs.

And there are many people who have become accustomed to, even “addicted” to, their phones. Just having the phone out of reach or out of sight makes them feel uneasy, can’t stand it, and have to rush to find it.

Money is the same, from ancient times until now, perhaps only newborn babies, hermits and tribes with few people living in remote areas do not need this special commodity.

A few days without money in your pocket, people may still see no problem, but if for a month or more there is no money coming in or going out, life begins to become unstable. At the mildest, the car runs out of gas and cannot move, the stomach is growling with hunger; at the worst, the house runs out of rice, the stove runs out of gas, the electricity and water are at risk of being cut off because the bill has not been paid; at the worst, falling into a state of illness, disease... All the doors in front of you are almost closed if your pocket continues to be empty.

Watching the sunset on the sea, a moment of peace of mind.

Balance life

Being overwhelmed by money and dominated by modern gadgets, I suddenly experienced a 21-day life without using money, phone, laptop. That was the time I was on a business trip to Truong Sa archipelago - the beloved island of the Fatherland.

When the Khanh Hoa Medical Ship carrying us left Cam Ranh port (Khanh Hoa province), the 3G, 4G, and wifi signals gradually weakened and then turned off completely on modern devices. At first, not yet used to the lack of communication, the mobile phone was always within reach of everyone. Out of habit, every now and then I and some colleagues picked up the phone, turned on the screen, but only looked at the time and there was no new information. A day, two days passed, I gradually realized that during the days drifting on the waves, this phone was no longer useful.

Early in the morning, my colleagues and I happily sat sipping hot coffee, watching the brilliant sunrise over the sea, watching fishing boats sail out to sea, and flocks of seagulls flying. Friends sat chatting for hours, telling each other about their jobs, offices, families, raising children, and the joys of life...

The sea is beautiful. The sea water is not just one color of blue but many other colors. In deep water, the sea water is dark blue, in shallow water, the sea shines with jade green and rainbows often appear on the sea.

The same thing happened in the afternoon. After dinner, we leisurely sat on the deck watching the sunset. Watching the sun gradually set, the sea sparkling like a mirror, the waves chasing each other endlessly and feeling the cool breeze brushing across our faces. In the evening, with the sound of the guitar, we sang to each other songs about the Party, Uncle Ho, love for the homeland, country, love between couples and songs about the sea, Truong Sa and Hoang Sa islands.

When the ship docked, there were 3G and 4G signals on some submerged and floating islands, but the signal was very weak, only enough to make a short phone call home to visit family, but not enough to process information. In addition to our journalistic work, we also spent time exploring the sea, taking pictures of sea urchins, recording colorful fish, picking up shells, clams, and coral branches as souvenirs, or playing, swimming, and splashing water on each other...

At these moments, I feel like I am back in my eighteen or twenty years, a carefree, happy, and optimistic life, free from work, without worrying about food, clothing, or money. It can be said that life is like heaven when it is no longer dependent on modern things.

This seems simple, but over the past decades, since the advent of smartphones, the intimate, close atmosphere of friends seems to have been lost. Our group of friends still meet often, but after a few polite greetings and a few work-related conversations, the phones of one person or another ring. Some people sit and listen, some people rush to pack their backpacks and go to work, while others sit back and quickly open their laptops to process information. Some other friends open their phones to surf social networks or play games.

The same goes for money. Before leaving Cam Ranh port, each of us brought some money to spend on shopping and spending during the days away from our families. But during the three weeks, no one had to spend anything, because all food, water and other supplies were taken care of by Naval Region 4. When the day of return, the money in our wallets was still the same, not a single penny was spent.

However, life is not as simple as a dream. The ship is approaching the mainland, the 3G, 4G, and wifi signals are strong again, the mobile phone notifies me of hundreds of messages and missed calls waiting to be processed. Messages from family, work, work schedules, electricity and water bills, wifi bills, expired car insurance, vaccination due dates... There is so much information that it takes me almost a week to process it all.

Gift of the sea.

It must be admitted that modern industrial products have greatly helped our lives. However, these products also have a significant impact on our lives. Balancing dependence on modern devices with self-care is essential in today's life.
