Coffee prices in Vietnam’s domestic market continued to decline this week, mainly due to the fall in London coffee prices and the sharp increase in supply from rival producing countries, temporarily easing the global supply shortage.

Mr. Doan Nguyen Duc (Bau Duc), Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hoang Anh Gia Lai, has just announced a plan to invest heavily in Arabica coffee in Laos. According to him, the company will plant 2,000 hectares of Arabica this year and plans to increase it to 4,000 hectares next year.

Mr. Duc said that Arabica is twice as expensive as Robusta – the most popular coffee in Vietnam, and has a short harvest cycle of only about 2 years. Meanwhile, durian takes 5-6 years to harvest, so Arabica is considered a faster investment option.

One of the main drivers for Hoang Anh Gia Lai to enter the coffee market is the strong demand from China. Young people in this country are gradually switching from tea to coffee, creating a huge potential consumer market in the region. This is also part of the reason for the recent sharp increase in coffee prices.

World coffee prices today

The coffee market saw a sharp decline last week. Arabica coffee for July delivery fell 18.55 cents per pound to close at 342.45 cents per pound, the lowest in 7 weeks.

Robusta also extended its five-week losing streak, closing at $4,510 a tonne, down $280 from the previous week and hitting a six-and-a-half-month low.

The downward pressure comes on concerns that supplies will remain ample. Robusta stocks monitored by ICE rose to an eight-month high of 5,438 lots. Arabica stocks also rose sharply, reaching 891,716 bags at the end of last week.

The forecast for Brazil’s 2025/26 coffee crop is also contributing to the price decline. According to Pine Agronegocios, this year’s production is estimated at 59.75 million bags, of which 36.46 million are Arabica and 23.29 million are Robusta (conilon). Although lower than the average international forecast (around 64.5 million bags), this still represents high production and strong exports.

On the policy front, the US Court of International Trade ruled last week that the current tariff structure was unlawful. However, the US government later appealed the ruling, and the ruling was put on hold, leaving the tariffs in place while the case was heard. However, experts see this development as positive for the trade of goods, as it could help stabilize market sentiment in the short term.
