Mr. Ho The Nhu, Vice Chairman of An Binh Commune People's Committee, said that due to the impact of high tides combined with heavy rains, there were some landslides on river banks and embankments of intra-field canals in the commune, affecting people's lives and production. High tides caused many sections of embankments to overflow and break, severely affecting traffic, production and daily life. The total length of the overflowed dike was about 15 km in 19/30 hamlets of the commune; 14 embankments were broken and 7 culverts collapsed with a total length of 297 m. Preliminary damage was estimated at more than 4.3 billion VND. Currently, the landslides have been basically repaired.
Mr. Ho The Nhu added that the locality has recommended that the superior sectors conduct a field survey of the sections along the Tien River and Co Chien River that are at high risk of landslides, and at the same time propose fundamental and synchronous solutions to support the locality in proactively preventing natural disasters, limiting property damage, and helping people feel secure in agricultural production.
In Cho Lach commune, Mr. Le Van Loc, Head of Son Quy hamlet, informed that the recent high tide caused water to overflow the dike, causing 20-30 cm of flooding on an area of more than 30 hectares of fruit gardens of households in the hamlet. To overcome the problem, people proactively hired vehicles to reinforce two 1.7 km long dikes, raising them 30-40 cm higher than the existing dike surface, with a total cost of more than 28 million VND contributed by the people in the hamlet.
According to Mr. Lam Van Tan, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province has directed the Irrigation Sub-Department to coordinate with localities to conduct field surveys of landslide areas and locations of overflowing and broken dykes. Localities are required to strictly implement the "4 on-site" principle to proactively handle the immediate situation, temporarily reinforce landslide and broken dyke locations, protect people's houses and orchards, and prevent upcoming high tides.
In addition, localities need to have a written request for financial support to the Department of Agriculture and Environment to synthesize and report to the People's Committee of Vinh Long province for consideration and timely support. This is to help localities proactively respond, overcome consequences, ensure safety and long-term stability for production and people's lives.
