On September 26, world oil prices fell from their highest level in 7 weeks. Many investors took advantage of the strong increase to take profits, while the US stock market fell for two consecutive sessions, creating more pressure.

Brent crude futures fell 0.6% to $68.88 a barrel. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell 0.7% to $64.51 a barrel. A day earlier, both crudes rose 2.5% to their highest levels since early August, thanks to a surprise drop in U.S. inventories and concerns about disruptions in Russian supplies due to tensions in Ukraine.

Analysts say oil prices are being weighed down by rising supply. A deal between Iraq and the Kurdistan region has paved the way for oil flows from Kurdistan to resume in the coming days, raising concerns that a supply glut could return.

Priyanka Sachdeva, an analyst at Phillip Nova, said the return of Kurdistan supply has increased concerns about a glut, pulling oil prices away from their peaks.

In addition to supply, the demand outlook is also weighing on demand. JP Morgan said U.S. gasoline demand is slowing, reflecting a post-summer slowdown in travel. Haitong Securities said that as the peak consumption season draws to a close, oil prices have yet to fully reflect the increasingly obvious risk of oversupply.

In addition to supply and demand factors, recent comments by US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell about US stock valuations being considered too high also worried market sentiment. The combination of pressure from stocks, new supply and weak demand has dragged oil prices down after a series of strong increases.
