Pig production cannot accelerate again
According to Vietnam Livestock Magazine , since the beginning of the year, pig prices have remained high, so farmers have made a good profit. However, farmers are still hesitant to restock due to concerns about market fluctuations and potential disease risks.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province, pig farming is favorable, due to the high price of live pigs, farmers have quite a profit. Accordingly, the price of live pigs fluctuates from 6.7-8 million VND/quintal, an increase of 1-1.2 million VND/quintal compared to the same period (calculated according to the highest price in the period).
Compared to the average production cost of live pigs of 5.2-5.3 million VND/quintal, farmers currently earn a profit of 1.9-2 million VND/quintal. Currently, the whole province has about 187,580 pigs, reaching 97.2% of the yearly plan, an increase of 2.1% (or an increase of 3,938 pigs) over the same period.
However, many pig farmers said that the African swine fever situation is still complicated in many localities in the province. At the same time, they are worried about the fluctuating price of live pigs, so farmers are not bold enough to reinvest.
Having just sold 10 pigs, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy (Trung Hiep commune, Vung Liem district) said: "I sold 7.8 million VND/quintal, after deducting expenses, I still made a profit of nearly 2 million VND/pig. The profit is quite good, but I am also hesitant to re-herd because I am worried about the unstable price of live pigs, which can fluctuate erratically, plus the risk of disease, and the high price of piglets."
