Food safety "red alert" after ASF pig case in Ha Tinh

In addition to price fluctuations, the live hog market last week was also shaken by news that pigs infected with African swine fever (ASF) were smuggled into a slaughterhouse in Ha Tinh.

Specifically, Ha Tinh Provincial Police arrested Mr. Nguyen Khac Thong (residing in Dong Tien Commune, Ha Tinh) on July 14. Mr. Thong bought 3 pigs from a household with a herd of infected pigs that had not been destroyed yet for 2.1 million VND, then sold them to a slaughterhouse for 6 million VND. When these pigs were brought to the slaughterhouse in Thach Lac Commune, the authorities inspected and determined that all 3 pigs tested positive for ASF virus. The case is being finalized by the Department of Investigation Police on Corruption, Economic Crimes, Smuggling and Environmental Crimes (Ha Tinh Provincial Police). The discovery of pigs carrying this pathogen has raised serious concerns about food safety and the risk of disease spreading in the farming community.

Experts say that the price of live pigs may continue to be under downward pressure next week. The reason comes not only from abundant supply and weak purchasing power, but also from consumer sentiment being affected by incidents related to sick pigs. In addition, the export of live pigs to China through unofficial channels has not yet resumed, causing difficulties in output, increasing pressure on the domestic market.

In this context, livestock farms and slaughterhouses need to especially tighten quarantine, traceability and improve quality control. These are necessary measures to protect consumers and maintain a stable supply chain of clean meat in the market.
