South Korea raises African swine fever alert to highest level

South Korea has detected an outbreak of African swine fever at a farm in Dangjin City, South Chungcheong Province, prompting the government to raise the alert level to “serious.” This is the first case of the year in the province and the sixth nationwide this year.

Immediately, the country imposed a 48-hour travel ban on all personnel and vehicles related to pig farms. The farm was sealed off, and epidemiological investigation teams and disease prevention forces were also deployed to cull sick pigs, disinfect and control the spread.

More than 300 farms in the area have been disinfected with 31 specialized devices. 136 farms in the epidemic control area will continue to be sampled and clinically examined within seven days.

Although South Korea has culled more than 1,423 pigs, this number accounts for less than 0.01% of the total herd, so it has not put pressure on meat supply. However, officials said they will continue to closely monitor the risk of a large-scale outbreak.
